Attempted Suleide.—Potsouing by Laud
Considerable excitement was occasioned in
the usually quiet borough of Temperanceville
on Sunday by the announcement that Mrs.
Kelly, the wife of a school teacher, named
Robert Kelly, had attempted to commit suicide
on Saturday evening, by taking a large quen
tity of laudanum. Dr". Simcox had been called
upon, about seven o'clock Saturday evening,;
to visit Mrs. Kelly. On reaching the house,
he found her in convulsions, and her son in
formed him that bi. mother had taken lauda
num. From the bottle, which was found in
the.house, Ala probsble the quantity taken was
about three ounces. The Dr. administered a
powerful emetic and succeeded in removing the
drug from the stomach. During the evening
Mrs. Kelly grew better, and on Sunday and
Monday, although her nervous system was
greatly prostrated, there wfts a fair prospect of
her recovery.
The cause of this rash attempt to destroy
her own life, by Mrs. Kelly, is the dissipation
of her husband, who is a man of tine talents,
well known about the city, and an excellent
teacher, but unfortunately addicted to his cups.
Mrs. Kelly had once before attempted to kill
herself. Last spring her husband had been in
dulging freely for some time, neglecting a se
lect school which he had been teaching in the
borough, and frequently absent from home.
On the 31st of March Dr._Simeox was called
upon by a brother of Mrs. Kelly's, who inform
ed him that she was very ill. He went to the
and foUnd her insetisifile. .1 edging

ing it to be all absorbed in the stomach, ad
ministered strong coffee and other remedieS to
keep the patient awake, which, acting as an
emetic resulted in the expulsion of a small piece of
gum opium. Being followed by powerful einet
ics, some 16 to 20 grains of the gum were removed.
How much she had taken was not ascertained,

she said sbe could not see her husband about the
streets in his then eondition, and that she prefer

to affect Kelly, and for a time he kept sober,
and again went to teaching. Buton the Fourth
he again became intoxicated and so continued.
''This renewed his wife's uneasiness, resulting
in the second attempt on her own life as above,
for which she gaye the same reason as before.

BALL'S OHIO MOWER AND MOWER AND REAP
ER COMBINED, for the harvest of 1859, to which was
awarded the highest number of merit marks, (81, B 3 a
Mower, at the groat national trial, held at Syracuse,
July, 1867.
In again presenting this truly valuable machine, to
the fuming community, we do it with the assurance
that it will still hold and 'retain its place at the head of
all other machines.
As a Mower it is well-known, and we now present it as
a combined machine, the reaper having been wall and
fully tested during the harvest of 1857 and 1858. Among
the many advantages it possesses over other machines,
aro—
. •
1, Lightness of draft, durability, no side draft, steel
cutter bar ? portability, etc., etc.
it, Running on two wheels, the cutter bar being hinged,
allows it to follow the uneven surface of the ground
3, Tho very important advantage, possessed by no
other machine, of regulating the cut, by means of a
lever at the driver's right hand, so as to cut high or low
without stopping, which any farmer, who has cut lodged
grass, knows is of great importance.
4, Its portability, as it can be transported from place
to place without taking oft the Cutter bar or taking out
the knife, being ready In a moment for cutting or trans
porting.
6, Every farmer knows the advantages of having ma
chines manufactured near home.
6, Having two cutter bars, one expressly for reaping,
cutting six feet wide, and one expressly for mowing,
cutting four feet eight inches wide,
completely adapts
it, either for mowing or reaping. The change canbe
effected from mowing to reaping or reaping to mowing
in fifteen minutes.
These are only a few of the many andvantages the
BALL MACHINE possesses over all others, and we
would advise those wishing to purchase to examine this
machine before purchasing elsewhere.
