THE BOAT RACE ON BATURDAY.—The first boat race of the season came oil on Saturday evening, between the two eight oared barges "Undine" and "Daniel Boisol." At seven o'clock the appointed hour, a large assemblage -had collected on both banks of the Allegheny river, - and off the 'Hand street bridge. About half past seven the word was given, and the boats started, opposite the Eagle Cotton Yacto vy,..Allegheny. ' At first the boats kept close together, running . very evenly for about a mile, when the Undine shot ahead about three feet. This was sustained for a time, until some three-quartersof a mile of the "Belvidere," the BoLsot gained the advantage by about two lengths, and kept it until she reached the "Bel videre," winning the race in forty minutes. The distance run was nearly four miles, and the time, taking into consideration the fact that the oarsmen rowed up stream, was fair. The stakes were small, being only a - supper, which was discussed at the "Belvidere House" by the antagonistic crews and their friends. The result was unexpected, as it was generally thought the Boisol would be beaten. There was a good deal of. side betting, and money 'rhittiged hands freely: Mudi interest was man ifested, and the Bultidero was crowded all even ing. York. _r NEW Yortx, July ,9.—The close of the week brings with it the first indications of the relax ation in the money market, expected after the heavy payment incidental to the first of July, bad been. provided for. The tendency to in creased ease however, is not decided enough to effect materially the rates of discount, is mani festing itself chiefly in all loans. The abate ment in the gold export seems to have contrib uted to the peer supply and for temporary use. Fivoand a half per cent. has been accepted to day, on first class securities. The ruling flora is six per cent., at which lenders are more nu merous than early in the week On paper the the rates for long dates are fully sustained, and in most eases, rather more desirable lists may be had at seven per cent., while short bills are still scarce, and go readily at GC G 3 per cent. The general temper of the stock market is not so satisfactory as yesterday, but yet there is no material concussion, submitted to on the better class of securities. Tho weakness is confined mostly to several prominent railroad stocks, which are passed fur sale for future delivery. The weekly bank statement closing to-day will include the average of only five business days, but nevertheless will reflect the heavy move ments of the week. The bank specie reserve will we think be within $21,250,000®521,- 500,000 against $22,400,000 last week. The I loans are expected to show a falling off. The total exchanges, through the clearing house, for the five business days of this week, were $105,388,818, an average per day of $21,077, 7133. The Bremen for Southampton to-day took in specie to the amount at $590,542. A tele gram from Philadelphia this morning to Thompson Bros. reports that the notes of the Bank of Lawrence, Penn's., are thruwn out. A five per cent. dividend is announced to-day by the Cleveland, Columbus and Cincinnati R. R. Co. payable August Ist, at the office of the United States Trust Company. Annexed is the official statement of the business of the half year: Gross earnings for six months end ing June 80th, 1859, $486,796,39 ; expenses for the same time, including taxes, $244,425,26 ; not for slx months, $240,371,13 ; five per cent dividend declared July Gth, 1859, $237,305; surplus $3,066,13. Business on the Corn ex change has been more active this week, being influenced in a great measure by the exciting European war news. Tho fluctuations in bread stuffs have been quite sudden at times especial ly in flour, but at the close the dull accounts from Liverpool seem to hews a corresponding effect, here. Speculation in Provisons have received little or no encouragement from Li v pool advises, and the general tendency of the market has been downward, with only occa sional buoyancy. The business in Produce has been estimated almost eutirely by the home demand, the shipping inquiring being quite sus_pendtel: . Square. • The great battle reported by this steamer was fought within or on the Western lino of the great " historic square," which makes that locality more interesting than ever. We have therefore, translated for the Bulletin the follow ing excellent description of it, given by the Paris Steele : " The famous square formed by Mantua, Verona, Peschiera and Legnano, is at .this moment the object of universal attention. It is there that the Austrians have taken refuge, as an impregnable fortress. We have thought it may interest our readers to enter into some historic and topographical details on the impor tance of the situation. In order to follow our remarks, it is necessary to have before the eyes a correct map, and one drawn on a sufficiently largo scale. For though the region we are-go ing to describe is not of great extent, there is not one of the places included in it, which has not at this moment, great importance in a strategic point of view. " The square is enclosed between the Mincio, the Adige, Lake Garda, and the lower Po, from Mantua to Polessella. The Mincio forms the defensive front of the celebrated square. From Peschiera to Mantua (the only line that can be approached, the rest being a marsh,) the Mincio runs over a space of six leagues, as the bird flies, and it is within this space that a pas sage must be forced. For this operatien there are some points designated naturally by their position. In fact, the first thing to be done to secure the passage of bridges thrown over the river, is to drive away tho enemy from the bank. It is not hard to understand that if, in the course of the river, it reaehls a place where on the one band, the water makes a bend to wards the side of the agressors, and on the other that the ground commends the shore where the enemy is placed, there will be a great advantage in trying the passage at that point because thus a tremendous the can be concentrated on the enemy who will thus be placed in the midst of a semi-circle of bat teries. "Now the Mincio presents to an army wish ing to force a passage, coming from Milan, two places only where this advantage is found. These aro Mozambano and Volta. At these two points the river makes a bend from the west side, and the ground on the right bank is considerably higher than that on the opposite side. Therefore, these two points were choson during the wars of the revolution, in 1796 and 1809, well as during the campaign of 1848, for the passage of the Mincio. As for the en emy, ho has, in the villages of Ponti, Vaßeg gio and Puzzolo, on the left bank, positions where he may try to oppose the crossing of the river. Moreover, the possession of two places like Mantua and Peschiura, on ssi sh,os; 4, line, makes the defeat more my • fur the wings are perfectly suportid, and attacks may be made at ar,y moment from either of these fortresses. " But History is there to tell us that with a a well managed army thopassage of the Mincio is airman certainty. The Austrians could not prevent Hopaparte from crossing itin 1796 ; nor Brune ip ip spite of the bloody battle given hint by Bellegarde ; nor could It in 1848 prevent the Pied nu: l ;4es° army, which forced the river at three points : Goito, Itiozambano and Borglietto. The passage on ce ac hle ved,th e army will find itself in the centre of the quadrangle and the places that protect its corners: Pw eh iera, Mantua, Legnano and Verona, concern ing the position and strength we have some de tails to give, not taken from old books, but furnished by a person who has lately visited there. "Peschiera, situated ate place where the Min cio leaves Lake Garda, is imna ,- ,ta9,t, inasmuch as it commands the lake as Well as the road from Brescia to 'Verona, and' hOlds the flood gates by tb'e water of the Minch) may be increased or diminished at pleasnre, It is a place of the second class, vibpse fortifications were augmente4 aitor 1848. At the time it capitulated after a siege of ono month, directed by the late Duke of Genoa, brothor of the present King of Sardinia. "Mantua is q place of the first class, and was generally considered the key of Northern Italy. until Verona acquired its present politi cal and military importance. It is easily ap proached, by reason of Its situation in the midst of three lakes and of marshes formed by the waters of the Minch), whose lower extrem ity it guards. It communicates with terra ileum by fire causeways—those of Roverbello, I.egnano. Modena, Bergoforto and Cremona. These causeways are fortified, and the citadel of La Favorite. which defends the Roverbello road, is protected against surprise hy asartifi cial inundation worked by by raulle machlneii. In 1848 the Ansf, rians reior 'to this Means of defense aghTrist s the Fiedinontese. They had then, and still have, oh the' upper lake, a flo tilla which renders important service. The very fact of the isolation of Mantua, commu nicating with terra firma only by the five causeways we have designated, shows that% is easy to blockade it. For this purpose, kt is only necessary to master, by ineir ‘ s of voLks, the outlets of these five comreAni4tians. So, contrary to the *ustial priatiee, the besieging corps May' he 'Weiler' to the garrison. In 1796 Sorrier," with 8,000 men, kept in there a force at least double. Beyond the main fortifications, Mantua has also two entrenched camps, and finally. at the south of the city is a vast extent of marshy but very fertile land, surrounded on all sides by the waters of the Mincio, the Po, and the Ausona, and called the Seraglio, AI4 tie Campagna of Mantua id and itulokes, to a cor- Lain extent, part °fe dititeatioiss of the place, *tah &Hires Worn it great resources. The villages'b f forgo-Foite and Governolo give possession of the Seraglio. In 1848 Governolo was the scene of a brilliant affair, whielt cot the enemy six hundred killed Anil Ibk,tr, hun dred prisoners and iskacla tkike riedmontese masters of She *feet°, Legnlnohas a good' bridge-head 'on the Adige, of which it defends the lower part, which is further protected by the artificial in undation of the Molinella. Kray employed this means against Scherer in 1799. "Verona defends the centre of the Adige. It is, like Mantua, a first-class fortsess, the, de fences being after the !Oen; Ortowers called Max.initiyeuuc• Ti' is situated at the foot of thelait . slopes of i!dontebaido. A series of heights marked by the villages of Chievo, 311.assi 7 na, Santa-Lucia, Tomba, and Tombetta; extend ed to the west in front of the 'city, forming a vast entrenched camp of about six kilometres, having the form of a semi -circle, the twat ex tremities of which join the Adige at c4iie,vo and"rombetta. It was against these heights that the Sitrhinian army dached on the ilth of May, 1848. It 'We to. wry them and then induce h yerowi. But after a brisk 'affair at Santa Lucia, the battle remaining undecided, Charles Albert retired to his former positions. Verona, besides its political importance (for since the evacuation of Milan is the centre of the Austrian government. in Italy,) has atm immense strategSe Amportsuaci It holds the roads 9A . ..0w itik)ul:and the Tyrol, and the likighesc inkiitary considerations are attached to its possession, as the principal defense or the line a the .Adige. This river, whose course is parallel to that of the Minch), forms the second obstacie,to an army after it has crossed the latter river. It is- very rapid until near Magnano, ' where its banks bwomo lower, and the crossing beemues easy from this point to Carpi, fiNtcpi to occupy or blockade LefinMa " 43 the north, Bnssolengo, on the right„ tempt a c i t s o o ss a t r e si r t t i v o e n t. fav i o t ra w b as le t ig er nn th a a t- t Brune effected his passage in 1800; but in 1848, after the glorious combat of I'astreno; the riodmontase confined themselves to wen.' pying Bussolengo, without attempting to czess. North of Verona are Itivoli and. Corona, so celebrated in our wars or the revolution, and w hi c h were, in 1848, the scene of many com bats, especially that of July 22d, so glorious for Piedmont. These are the advanced posts of Verona, which connect it, fey the defense of the Adige, with thole of !layered° and Trenta, and wit tba itldiau Tyrol, which is a natural appendage of the quadrangle. "We have thus exposed, without any dis uise, the strength of this line, which Mao im portant Abet the military fate of Italy seas there. The Minch) and the Adige onceermised, the four fortresses taken or blockaded, there is an end of Austrian domination on this side of the Alps ; for our fleet holding the sea, Venice is not a base of resistance comparable to the \ ' great quadrangle. We have not concealed dif ficulties' for we have a - profound faith and a rational conviction that we possess the niein s of overcoming them. Numerically our forces, if not superior, are at least, equal to' those,' of 'the enemy. The superiority of our artillery, already so gloriously demonstrated, will be still better shown when it is employed in demolish ing walls. Our gun-boats can, in a few how; destroy, the enemy's late flotilla, and make ,us masters of Peschiera. It will be understood, then, how much the danger of penetrating into thequadrangle will be diniinished, since we would be assured of the safety- of.eur two wings towards Peschiera and Mantua, We do , not speak of the diversion on . yeniee. Aestoia can not be allowed to organize in the ItalianTyrol a fortified place, neutral' in her - laVor, 'active only against us, where the - eneiny may prepare his operations with a certainty. that Ave would never damage them.
