THE NOTE-BOOK OF A MEDICAL STUDENT
By .61:70IISTA. JOEINSTONE.
Authoress of Recollections of Mrs. Esther Tafralus:
•
The following strange event was" related to
me when a student in ----- Hospital, by a
household servant of the name of Anne Fair
ly. - She came into the hospital to'be cured of
a disease,-to which her classes aro peculiarly
liable—a white swelling of the knee, Showas,
at that time,_about forty years of age. in ber
youth this, person'a first place WM in the capa- .
city of housemaid to a nobleman's family, the ,
head-,of whom I shall call, the Marquis . 0
Cornerry. a.personage of some celebrity, con
nected—and not remotely—with royality. Per
haps it will be bast if 'I tell the story- in her
own words, exactly as I put it down utile time
she relatedit.
"My lady had an intimate friend, Lady
Moashill—a Countess she was, and a very fair,
beautiful woman to look at; pleasant spoken.
too, and not in the least haughty. The lady
was often on a visit to Lady .Cornberry, and
her visits mostly lasted a very long tine; for
the earl, her. husband, was employed a great
deal in Parliament, and, -having 'no ehildnin;
Lady Alosshill felt dull. So she told Theresa,
my lady's, second maid, who attended Lady
Mcissbill, , when she -visited at my lord's, to save
her bulyship . from bringing her own maid.
"After I had Hied .at my lord's for about
twelve months, - the hOusekeeper sent for us of
the servants' ball, one morning, to come all to
gether to her room. We wondered- a good
deal - what coulcl'he the matter, but gradually
we found ourselves all collected in the house
keeper's- room. Mrs. Merry's speech was a
sharp one, very much to the purpose and not at
all satisfactory—at least to the -feelings of some
of us.
It's a very unpleasant business I have to
speak . about,' said she, • but it worries me .a
good deal more, than I dare say, it will any of
you. To speak plainly, and without any pre
amble, my lady has lost some of her diamonds ;
and, of course, suspicion falls on the ser
vants.
•There was a general exclamation. Miss
Dormer and Mlle Theresa, my lady's own
attendants, had desired their drawers aid
boxes,.even their pockets might be searched ;
and it had bear done without any result af
fecting tho characters of those two young per
sons.
"Everybody was vociferous in denying the
guilt imputed.
"As for myself, I wasexcessively indignant,
for I kept my lady's rooms clean, though only
under house-maid; and, knowing that I would
have died sooner t han.have taken the diamonds,
I was very vindictive. I got severely rebuked
by the - housekeeper.
"'No one is accused,' she said in reply to
my, angry defense; but some one has taken
them, they couldn't go without hands, that
is certain. They are very valuable, and my
lady may well feel annoyed at their disap
pearance.
"We all went to the drawing-room to my
lady; and demanded that our boxes and per-.
sons .might be searched. She acceded to this
request.
" one deed, feel aggrieved,' she observed,
" at this proceeding ; innocent persons, of course,
will remain blameless, and the guilty one only
will be detected.'
"The search was made, but fruitlessly.
As Mrs. Merry observed, the house was
Well
nigh turned out of windows ; yet neither my
lady's diamond's nor the thief who took them
were discovered: .
"A detective officer was brought into the
house, but even his sagacity failed to discov
er - the truth; and so, for ktime, the matter
dropped, not however, with Out leaving a sore :
ness rankling in every dependent of that noble
lictrisehold.
'helleve, now, that I had what is usually
.
perhaps I might rather to say too much temper.
oilfield too much spirit, for my station in life
was no more individually suspeetedThan any of
my fellow-servants ; but, I had a sturdy honest
ness of soul, and it galled me terribly to 4 think
that honesty should be suspected. I fre
quently deOared I should never rest till the
real thief was disnovored,
and, to say the truth,
my restless and suspicious vigilance rendered
trot as goad A detective as if Head been trained
to the business.
"My father, who was a shoemaker in the
village where my lord's principal country resi
dence.was situated, was a very violent rural
politician, and a fierce upholder of what he
called the People's Rights,'. I used to hear
him harangue his neighbors, hour after hour.
on evenings, when his work was dune, and
they met in the kitchen—which served our
family for parlor, kitchen, and hall'—over a
pipe and tankard; for, with ell, his violence of
party spirit, my father was , no -put-house fre
quenter. -He - was like many Englishmen of
his - class,' whom I have since observed,
flefeil:42ef.,°l' of the 11ces . pr omr. eristoMeY
---jpnr pram, arrog,ance,. end ,ektravaganoe—
an yet, withal, in his heart of hearts, a secret
admirer of a lord. It must have been owing
to the latter feeling,-that when my lady ex
pressed a gracious intention of taking me into
her household, my father did not offer the vio
lent opposition which might have been expect
ed from one of his radical opinions; Sorne re
sistance-on his part certainly occurred ; but
the shallowest observer might have seen it was
assumed for the sake of consistency' than from
Hay dislike to my living with ' , real nobility '
enongh 'o'f his
preindie'es to set myself 'tip as a talker against
ellPeriois -- 4 'proceeding for which I was
often scolded, and not unfrequently threatened
with dismissal. On the occasion of My lady's
loss my irritable.and chafed 'spirit vented its
bitterness' against the whole noble order to
which my lord's family belonged. It is a -won
der to me, now, that .I was not at once sent
away for impertinence and sauciness ; but Mrs.
Merry, the housekeeper,.was somewhat
ed that way herself, so-I suppose she had a fel
-Itlw feeling,'.

returned home, and the diamonds were almost
forgotten, and rarely talked about. 'hot

to calm down. I gave satisfaction In my work,

variety of work. It has been gotten up with reference
to furnishing a strong and durable, yet light and tasty
Machine, at a less price than either of the above. It
runs very easy, rapidly, and is pronounced the, best
machine now in market, for r.io. .
No. 0. This is a Machine got up on an entirely new
principle, different from anything ever before offered
to the public, and we confidently assert that for family
use it has not an equal. It is very light and tasty, runs
very rapidly: is almost noiseless in its operation, and
uses a straight needle. It is so arranged as to be
utterly impossible to miss stitches. It has a tension on
both sides, and carries a large supply of thread-on the
under spool. The motions - are -gained by two small.
cranks that ran without perceptible noise.. The two
threads are worked in such a manner as never to both
pull at the same time, and consequently little liable to
break. The seam is very elastic, and the thread does
not break in - washing. It-will do coarse work better
than any machine now m market, as it uses silk, cotton
or linen with equal facility. Trice,

It makes a seam which will not rip or ravel, though every
