;A" GAMBLER'S > STORY.
It is now nearly four years since business of
importance compelled mo to make a long and
dangerous journey through the wilds of New
Mexico.
I chanced to have for a traveling companion
a noted California gambler; by the name of
Tom Hickman, and as the Apache tribe of In
diana were just at that time unusually hostile,
the company of this braver man was quits agree
able tome.
Mounted on our hardy little Mexican po
nies, with our trusty rifles resting easily across
our saddles, we started and moved slowly. on
ward, apparently indifferent of the surrounding
peril.
The monotony of being a silent sentinel is at
all times irksome, but nevermoreso then when
traveling in an Indian country; I reminded
Hickman of this fact, and proposed to him that
ho would narrate to me a brief sketch of his
life, "for," said I, "it mutt be checkered with
many strange adventures:"
He replied, "Indeed you are right as to its
having been strange, for so it often appears to
me,when I recall any portion of it ; but listen
while I tell it to you :
" I was burn ea the right bank of the Mis
souri river, several hundred miles above its
mouth. My father owned a small farm and a
few slaves. There was a largo family of us,
and .we all had to work hard to obtain .the .
means of subsistence.' Schools were scarce in
our parts, and the only lesson I studied after
working hours was the art of playing, cards.
"Seated on logs, I have spent night after
night in gambling with our- fiegroes. The
stakes usually played for in these games con
sisted of such minor articles as pocket knives,
buttons, ; but oftimes it happened that oven
these worldly goods were scarce among us; and
then IVO played to kill time, as the saying is.
"The flatboats on the river would frequent
ly tie up at our wood yard, and the first sum
of money 1 ever won was obtained from a boat
man on one of them.
" Thus years flew by, until at last I one day
found myself possessed of money sufficient to
buy of a neighbor a valuable horse and equip
ments.
"Myfather despatched me, shortly after this
event, to a town located over fifty miles from
'-` 1 our loo•house. It was the first time in my 'life
I had been so far from home, or had seen a
, r ".;; settlement. With a merry heart I made the
journey to the place, but with a sad mie I re
f turned. It was the old story of the green
country boy being duped by the village sharp
ers.
" Not satisfied with seeing the sights, I made
new acquaintances, and finally I fell into the
hands of a professional black-leg, who easily
won my horse and saddle.
" Bankrupt both in pocket and in spirits, I
traveled home on foot. This adventure made
me resolve never to touch another card, and
for live years I kept my promise?
"The Mexican war broke out, lind I enlisted
in a company of volunteers, and was actively
engaged during the war. Fighting and gam
ing, you know, go hand and hand, trierefore my
old h. bits returned to me.
" When peace was declared, and our com•
pane disbanded, I visited my friends in Mis
souri, and then, in company with some emi
grants, I started overland to California.
"The skill I here exhibited as a dealer of
the Mexican game of monte, caused my ser
vices to be engaged at the then famous El Do
rado House, of San Francisco. Money, or
rather gold dust, was plenty, and as gambling
was fashionable, I never lacked for-custom-
ers..
"I had thus been employed about six
months, when ono night I was drawn into an
encounter with a desperado, and, in self-de
fense, I was obliged to inflict on him a severe
wound with my bowie knife. This fellow was
a member of a. party of put-throats who lived
about the gambling establishments of the
city, of whom the gamblers are in great
dread.
" It now became necessary for are to make
my escape to ft distant part of the country. I
advised with my friends, and they counseled me
to go to the mines.
"The knowledge I had gained of the world
by at first being a woodman, then a soldier, and
finally the boon companion of different indi
viduals, who styled themselves gentlemen,
made me accomplished in almost any character
I chose to undertake.
"To win the confidence of the miners of the
locality 'to Which I was 'mond, T first had to
change my flash clothing for those of a person
in an humbler sphere of life. Fortunately I fell
in with - a Mormon, who was kind enough to
make the desired exchange. On my hack his
garments acted just like nettles, and during
the time that I wore them, I was never at
ease, but continually hankered after more ras
cality.
"Before quitting my old haunts in the city I
had taken the precaution to inform myself of
the most likely plan to make a raise of some
money. A friend gave me directions by which
1 could find the cabin of a man who was well
known to . the surrounding country, from the
fabulous amount of gold dust he was supposed
be possessed of. Several gamblers had pre
viously endeavored to fleece this man, but he
had proved too wide awake for them. Noth
ing daunted by this state of affairs, I commenced
my journey, and after several days of fatiguing
r travel on foot (for which the luxuries of city
life had entirely unfitted me,) I hove in sight
of the home of my intended victim.
The external appearance of this house did
not speak much in favor of the wealth of its
owner, nor was indeed the country around
very inviting, but I cheered myself with
thoughts that these were things of minor
peqtance to me. My business was with the
truisiii-e which Was IN•ded . up there. The snni I
pace lyliich I was traveling brought me in
due time to the door or 1114 . haMlet, :and as it

voice from within answered, 'come in.'

SEWING
MACHINES
Have gained the confidence
of all who use them, and have
proved ono of the most vain
a.blo Inventions of the age.
They use a Shuttle, making
~ides of the cloth alike, which
aveiled or pulled out..
They are all made with the highest mechanical skill,
and all warranted to work well on all kinds of goods,
from the Lightest Fabric to Heavy Leather. In particu
lar., wo would call the attention of all to our new - Family
Swing Machine. It has been manufactured expressly
for Family Use, and has met with favor from all. It is
so simplified as to render it almost impossible toga out
of order, or derange its operations; indeed it is so sim
ple as to astonish one, that so small a piece of mechan
ism will sew.
Below, we give a description of the different styles of
the Weed Patent.
No. I. Is a very convenient style, which can be
worked by hand or foot, on or off its own table. For
convenience of shipping, and also for large manufacto
ries. where it is necessary to place a number of Machines
into a long bench, making one table answer for them
all. Place, Site.
No. 2. With Walnut or Mahogany Table, either will
or Inthont Box Top, which locks down. Price, $lOO
and $llO.
No. 3. Same size as No. 2, but runs with a belt, and
at a much higher rate of speed. This kind is well
adapted to manufacturing Clothing or Leather work.
This is really the cheapest Machine in the market, as
there is no work done on a Sewing Machine that it will
not do. It is confidently asserted that this Machine,
runs easier than any machine now in use. Price, $lOO.
No. 4. This machine has a long arm, to accommo
date large work. IL runs at a high rate of speed, runs
easity, and is, without doubt, the best Machine for Tail
or's use, ester otlered to the public. It is also peculiarly
tilted for plantation work, as it is very simple yet sub.
stantial and durable, with but little liability to get out of
order. Price, $l3l
No. 5. This is a new and cheaper style, and a gen:
eral favorite for Family, Light Leather, and a great
variety of work. It has been gotten up with reference
to furnishing a strong and durable, yet light and tasty
Machine, at a less price than either of the above. It
runs very easy, rapidly, and is pronounced the best
machine now in market, for $5O.
No. 6. This is a Machine got up on an entirely new
principle, different from anything ever before offered
to the public, and we confidently assert that for family
use it has not an equal. It is very light and tasty, runs
very rapidly: is almost noiseless in its operation,
and
uses a straight needle. It is so arranged as to be
utterly impossible to miss stitches. It has a tension on
both sides, and carries a large supply of thread on the
under spool. The motions are gained by two small
sranks that run without perceptible noise. The two
threads are worked in such a manner as never to both
pull at the sae time, and consequently little liable to
brerdt. The seam is very elastic, and the thread does
list break in washing. It will do coarse work better
than any machine now in market, as it uses silk, cotton
or linen with equal facility. Price, $5O.
Descriptive circulars furnished gratis.
