The_ trial of Charles Slacker, on trial for the
killing of, Thomas Bradley was resumed this
morning, the testimony for the defense pro
tmling as follows:
Frederick Hyle, sworn—Was at Hughes' tho
night of the killing. Saw Bradley, .11niley,
and Delaney, Charles Rico, Thomas Hughes,
and Thomas Morrison come in about seven o'-
clock. They took a drink; and Malley and
Bradley sung songs. Then 3lailey, ,Delaney
and others jumped up on the counter beside
Slacker. Malley asked him how ho liked the
songs Slacker said he didn't know; and Malloy
toll him he might have to like them. Slacker
got down off :the counter and wont into the
kitchen, and Boon after Bradley also went out,
but can't say where he went. Tom Hughes
and others went out the bar-room door opening
on the road; two persons wont out with Hughes.
They had been out scarcely two minutes when
I heard Slacker helloing intho back room, but
did not know what he said. Hughes came run
ning nut of the kitchen, through the bar-robaa,
into the street ; be bad a cap on, Slacker then
came' ont with a knife in his hand; heard him

tumbler, ho had the knife in the left hand and
the tumbler in his right. Mr. Travers found

Mr. Hampton offered to prove by the wit
ness that Thomas Hughes had made certain de
clarations relative to Slack'er, of a threatening
character, but the court ruled the evidence im
proper. He next 'proposed to prove by this
witness and Many others,;thst prior and up to
the time of the killing of Bradley, he (deceased,)
had the general 'reputation in the vicinity, as
quarrelsome and dangerous in disposition, and
a fighting man, and was known to the prisoner
as such; at the time he Used; the knife. Tbis
was to, show: first, reasonable apprehension 'ot
Oita, ofilly harm entertained by the prisoner
front deceased, at the time the fatal blow was
given, and, second: to show the effect of Brad
ley's presence upon the mind of.the prisoner at
the time the alleged attack was made.
Mr. Collier objected to the evidence as irrel
evant and incompetent.
The offer was argued at some length by the
counsel.
The Court mid that both oilers were plainly
improper and that the evidence was irrelevant.
It was not the km of the land to admit it, and
to make an exception now would be to estab
lish a bad precadent. The offers were tlim.e
fore overruled. At the request of Mr. Hamp
ton an exception was noted.

Accidents and Incidents:
—The Greensburg Argue says, that a new
born child, was found dead in Milli
coal-bank, two miles east of Mount Pleasant,
on Tuesday last. The child had a shoe string
tied arena. Its neck. " The supposed mother
was also found in the bank covered with
meazles and in a dangerous situation. Sho is
said to belong to Fayette County and was on
her way to Somerset.
—Hog cholera is prevailing to an alarming
extentamong the hogs at Bridgeport, Fayette
county. A largo number of very tine ones have
died from its effect during the past four weeks.
A daughter of Mr. Sutherland Steers,
Adamsville, Muskingham county, Ohio, about
sixtom years of age, came to a premature and
unexpected death, one day last week. :She was
attracted to the front door of her father's resi-,
deuce, and in stepping out of the door, whicy
from the floor to the , ground is only twenty
inchw, it is supposed missed her footing, fell
upon her head, broke her neck, and died al
most immediately.
The Waynesburg Messenger says that a
considerable amount of hail fell in the north
ern part of Greene county on Friday last.
SURETY OF THE PEACE.—Mrs. Ellen Fitz
patrick, a white woman, and Fiances Richards,
a good-looking mulatto girl, live in a Court in
the Seventh ward. Yesterday morning a
quarrel arose betsvcan them concerning the
Children of the former, and the result was the
entering of cross-suits before Alderman Rogers
for surety of the peace and assault and battery.:
Both parties were held to hall in the sum of
5200 each to imswer the charge at the next
term of Court, and to keep the peace towards
each other.
TUE CROPS IN. KANSML—A correspondent,
writing from Osaukee, Jeltersbn 'County, K.
undeidato of, Juno 21st, says the prospects
for wheat, corn and cabbage in that vicinity are
very flattering. The corn is two and a half
feet high, and 'new potatoes are plenty. The
frost did not visit that locality; but on Sunday
evening, lath inst. a heavy wind and rain
storm tort down the fences, and injured Um
corn, breaking it down very much. The cli
mate is described as pleasant and healthful.

Claroniele published a statement to the effect
that A. M. & R. White, of Johnstown, had re
versed a verdict of SIG,OOO, against the Penn
Sylvania Railroad Company, on a wood con
tract, We are reliably informed that this is a
mistake; the Messrs. White claimed a verdict
in that amount., but the suit resulted in favor
of the Company, alter several trials in the dif
ferent Courts, both parties appealing.

Miller, %TM convicted during the United States
District Court, at William Tort, before Judges
McCandless and Grier, of manufeetnring coun
terfeit money. The casc terminated on Mon
day, and on Tuesday he was sentenced to peven

of yesterday evening, the chimney of a three
