We re give repQA, of; the proceedings m our local department, to which we refer our readers for particulars We-have had some little 'experience in libel suits ourself, and it is our decided opinion; after Mature deliberation, that the trian_Who sues an editor for libel is a very great fool! inc'N of us are perfect, and temper and prejudice sometimes get the better of even 'an editor's judgment. But it is the policy as well as the duty of every editor who has wronged a- citizen to place him right. 4lietr convinced that he has coin mitted such wrong, and the character which needs sustaining by a pecuniary valuation of dainages before jury, is generally a sort of pepper, aml salt affair, about which public opinion is considerably mixed. We .deem it: an especial folly when one editor sues another for damages for words printed in his paper. They both are in the same field - of *ion with equal weapons. The, public cares about as much about their personal battles as it does about a dog tight. If ther!,- like it i 'and think their readers do, let them pitch into one another through their respective columns to their heart's content. Few take for gospel what either of them savreganling the Other. lint when one of them sues the other, the public look upon him as making a sort of acknowledg ment, that he is beaten in the battle of this pens by his antagonist. •• Licking editors " is out of date: In fact, it can't be done with anything like fair play. The TeNe Peas men and the Dispatch men might have got up a four cornered duel with Heron and Reece on one side. and .John and .I:ones on the other, but we doubt it' a man of them would have stood fire. In the legal duel _now going on, :no blood will be spilt, it is true, but whether the verdict be for plain tiffs or defendants, we doubt whether the damaged characters will be improved. The public generally have a pretty correct es , tintate of those who conduct newspapers, and ebing to law, will not alter their opinion. Then came a wait, of which we do not com plain as the despatches were heavy, until. 11 o'clock, when another installment arrived. About 12 we had another batch, but the balance was not received until one o'clock in the morning, and was too late for insertion hi Wednesday's paper. No person who : knows anyt !ling about tele grtiphing will pretend that anything like six hours was required to send the amount of the Persia's new: sent west. Either the agenta or the Associated Press east were re miss in furnishing it at the telegraph offices or the telegraphers took their own time to send it. In either ease we arc the sufferers. In order to be in time for several of the most important morning mails, it is necessary for the morning papers to go to press by mid night. A victory where One party is so badly injured, by the conflict tbat he is (*lig- . ea to abandon his ground and to withdraw' . from the presence of the enemy, in order, as Louis Napoleon expresses it, to rest and re-organize his forces. In this process he is liable to be pursued and harrassecl by the victor; and the more decided the defeat, the greater the certainty and the more severe the damage of the pursuit. But in the present - case, instead of a falling back of the Aus trians they take up a new and formidable position flanking the French line of march. .This indicates very plainly that the Austrian bulletins aro perfectly correct when they speak of the fighting as not yet completed. ,It is apparent that another battle must yet take place before the Allies can occupy Mi lan in safety. The details of the battle of MAgenta ac cording to latest news by the Persia are re ceived very slowly at Paris and London. The losses aro undoubtedly severe on both .sides. The Austrian official account only acknowledges from 400 to 5,00.1 killed and wounded, and says that the enemy lost fully half as much again. We append the most important portion of the telegrams received on Tuesday night-, after our paper had gone to press. It is reported, but not confirmed, that Gen. Gyulai has been dismissed, and Gen. Pavia was evacuated by the Austrians and the Emperor Napoleon and King of Sardinia entered Milan on the Bth, where they were most enthusiastically received. They remain ed there at the last accounts. The latest advices say that the Allies were advancing from Milan in pursnitof the retreat ing Austrians, and also that Prussia had given indications of aiding Austria.
