Water .Tlglint Compartme nts '
The perilous affiventure of the :steamship
Edinburgh, which was cot througlrby Ice when
180 'miles -out at sea should not, he permit:.
ted to pass without , comment. ller preser
vation was duo solelr tr; the fact that her
hull was divided by/ bulkheads. into several
distinct water-tight /compartments.. In .the
absence of this -arrangement, a large lois,
of. PrOperty, and prlia.tily life, would have
ensued. The lamentable disasters already re
corded, arising -from `neglect to provide bulk
heads of this description, should be sufficient
to show that they are indispensable to every
sea-going steamer. t` lie terrible loss of the Arc
tic, in collision with the ..Yrench steamer:Vesta,
(tho latter being saved by her bulkhead,) will
never be forgotten; nor the sinking of the Li
onnaise, from a similar cause. The steamships
President, Pacific, City of Glasgow, and Tem
est'
having never been beard from, may have
been .heard from, may have been lost by col
lisions with icebergs, or some other ponderous
object. The - Europa, Persia, North American,
and other steamers, have likewise had experi
enced proving the imperious necessity of corn,
partments in this class of vessels. A collision,
even when going at e moderato speed, is almost
certain disaster.
In ten years ending with . 183 S, not less than
thirteen Atlantic steamers were lost, with three
thousand persons, or-a loss of about one passen
ger in every hundred carried. Surely, there
is sufficient reason for adopting every possible
precaution by which the safety of steamship
passengers can be enhanced. The chief 'requi
sitions for every first class Atlantic passenger
steamer are, security from Ore, through disci
pline, and, plank or timber bulkheads, made
water tight and properly strengthened, creating
several, separate compartments, any one of
which shall hove suffiehmt buoyancy to sus
tain the whole ship, in ease the others are bro
ken.

Pills. To tell you that I bare paid two millions of lot
lnri to make this truth known, is of itself an astounding
fact; and yet never was a truer word spoken. And
what is the result? Why, that about three million per
sons in the United States partially believe in the effica

from purgation in sickness. but what a field for phi
lanthropy! What millions remain to be converteff
And let one say that this knowledge is second only to
Christianity in the benefits it is capable of conferring on
mankind. Let not medical men persuade you that
Itrandeth:s Pills aro a quack remedy. It is no such
thing. What I sell you for two iduillings, these men
could not, supply for a dollar. My herbs and extracts
are all prepared in my own laboratory, where a steam
engine of one hundred and forty horse power is em

you feel disposed to take a sly dose, you will be able
certainly to live through the operation; and you may

that he hit your cruse exactly with the last medicine. 110
