PIKE'S PEAK—Lini ENTSE ALLEGED
GOLD DISCOVERIES;
There are two sides to the Pike's Peak
question, and either upon one or the other
--,perhtqis _upon both—the most tremendous
lies are told.
But recently we have had the most heart
rending accounts of starvation and distress
from thei - .‘'Oold XlMes," where gold wasnot.
The thousands'of emigrants wholad flocked
to this far . oif region, in hopes of bettering
their . condition, flocked back a gain with hro
ken health and• broken hopes. They pro
nounced Pike's Peak a deception—a humbug
—said there was no gold there, aud denounced
the whele affair. as a scheme of dishonest
speculators to their lots. The plains
were represented .as covered with starving
men, dying of deprivation and the " black
cholera,7—a new disease, to give additional
horrors to the sickening accounts.
Well, most, if not. all of these sad stories
were true. To thousand.i, the wild hunt
after sudden wealth terminated in a Golgo
tha in the wilderness. The people of the
country looked upon it as a fixed fact that
the gold hunters had been misled and de
ceived by speculating letter writer:: and let
ter writing speculators, wliose moral deprav
ity stopped not at the sacrifice of human
life in their efforts to sell lot:. at a huge price.
But just as the gold fever had died away,
and people were coming to their senses again,
welave another batch of most exeitini , news
coneerning, the recent discoveries of gold at
Pike's Peah. The burnt child dreads the
fire. The country has been deceived once
by the Pike's Peak fever, and WA' iv arn all
who have any ides of emigrating, to pause
and think. It is always better to let well
enough alone. ! These new accounts may
perhaps, be aJaStexpiring effort of desper
ate and dishorieSt speculating to bring ui
the price of lota and claini4 at :Pike's Peak
We advise eVery man who can earn
enough to eat to Stay at home and not be
cajoled by the present dazzling accounts.
But these accounts, nevertheless, come tons
from such sources and with such an appaeent
truthfulness upon their face, that, as a news-
monger, we do not feel at libertY altogether
to ignore theM. We give the caution and
at the same time copy a few of the late ac
&tints and leave people to judge of them
for themselves.
The Leavenworth Daily Times of the 10th
inst., issues an extra, containing a letter
from " its own correspondent " headed as
follows:
" hame i nse Gold Disroreries—Pike's Peak a
Glorious Reality—Miners Making Hundreds
of Dollars prr Day—The District in a Fa-
We make the following extract
On or about the 4th ult., Mr. J. B. Gregory,
from Gordon county, Georgia, started with a
party of seven, with IL view to a thorough ex
ploration of the northern tributaries of Vasquez
or - Clear Creek. du the 6th ult., they struck
what has since been called Quartz Creek, at a
point about thirty miles due west of this point,
and proceeded tohandle their pans and shovels.
At a point about three hundred feet above the
right bank of said creek, on the north side of an
extremely steep : hill, Mr. Gregory gathered a
pan of surface dirt, took it down to the water,
and was rewarded for the washing of itby four
dollars worth of tine dust. This, of course,
stimulated him and company to vigorous and
extensive prospecting, which resulted in the
striking of a bed of sand, amidst a bed of partly
rotten and pa i rtly burnt quartz, that was found
to .yield from five to
over
dollars to the pan.
The 'lead was traced over the mountains, by
dint of layers of-burnt quartz, which were
found on the surface, in a northeasterly and
southwesterly direction, and every member of
the party at once took up claims. At the time
snow and ice was yet plentiful in the valley,
and for several days the working of the lends
had to be delayed in consequence of the con
tinued blockade of the creek by ice. None
of the claims made on the lead discovered by
Mr. Gregoryfrot: whom the diggings atoltce
to o k, the - : name—had been worked more than
six days, and yet the yields enumerated below
have been obtained.
The newsof the striking .of this r i c h l ea d
soon reached this and adjoining towns, and va
rious ,prospecting parties set out, which suc
ceeded in discovering a number of additional
leads—the yielding of which I also give be
low. •
During the last ien days a perfect stampede
has taken place from this locality, iu the direc
tion of the Gregory diggings, and five thousand
men are, undoubtedly, examining at the pres
ent moment the bowels of mother earth in
that vicinity. Now lends are struck almoSt
every day, but on account of the local obstacles
in the way of rocks, rich growth of timber and
steepness of the mountain sides along which
the lead runs, etc., it will take seine time be
fore they will be in fact in working order. All
that has keen done is comprised in the follow
ing:.
J. H. Gregory worked his claim five days
and took out s,Ligo. •
William. Virajr, John W. Zeigler,Charles
M. Zeigler, David P. Spain, ArehibalcDefrees,
Wilkinson, Dcfrees, and William. Chess, all
formerly of South Bend, Indiana, formed the
party that accompanied Gregory, and had all
taken clainis on the latter 's load. The four
first mentioned commenced working their
claims on the 25th ult., and took outon Wed:.
nesday, the 25th, $29,5; Thursday, the 26th,
$410; Friday, th 27th, $495 ; Saturday, the
28th, $340; which shows an ag create result
of four days' work amounting to $1,560 Tho
three last mentioned worked their claims joint
ly five days', during which they realized $l,-
500.
The names of a number of others are
given who have been equally successful.

FLATTERING REPORTS.
From nosiness correspondence of Smoot, Russell k Co.]
CENTEX. CITY, Juno 4, 1859.
I send you to•dey, per Leavenworth City
and Pike's Peak Express, gold dust amounting
in value to $403,35, for which you will please
give me credit. The package marked A is
Platte River gold, end worth here $lB per
ounce. That marked Jackson SI Boulder is also
worth $lB. This, you will observe, is a very
line specimen, and is calculated to have a good
effect if seen by California miners. It resem!
bles California gold more closely than any
other yet discovered.
I write you honesily, gentlemen, and
ny firm belief that in two weeks I will be able
:o ship you, as purchasers on consignments,
from live to ton thousand dollars.
The gold in the largest package is from
Gregory, and is saved with quicksilver. For
this T paid $l6 per ounce. As soon as possible
advise, me as to the real value of each speci-
men.
The mines are suprisingly rich, co old min
ers say. They are astonished, and cannot
lieve it, even if they do see it. Claiins.are be
ing sold every day at from $l, per foot to
$. - 20,000.
These are repruentatatiuns made to me by
parties in whom I have the most implicit.
The holders of the gold district nt Gre7ory'g
demand s . '2o per ounce fsr the gold. Thha
too much, and I will not give it unless you so
instruct. lam willing to give $l4 per ounce.
Since I wrote to you last. the reports from
the mines have continued to grow more encour
aging. •w leads have been =trick and pro
ved to be equally as rich as those about which
I advised you in my Inst. At th“se
who have their clain.s fully open are muking
from .`•:..•.16 t o $lOO to the roan per day
Respectfully,
All this reads very - Well, we admit. but
"there's luck in leisure.'' We advise all who
are thinking of Pike's Peak to wait till they
hear from Greeley ; he is up there smm
where. and if he makes up his mina to de
sert polities, the slave question. the New
York Teittote, and all his other humbm7s.and

not say that we'll go ton, but--we'll think
about it.

TnE London Times, after a careful weighing
of all the statements upon the subject, official
and otherwise, decides that the weight of testi
mony indicates that the result of the affair at
Montebello was in favor of the French. In
- -
respect to the amount of Imagination displayed
in the despatches, it gives the preference to the
Sardinians, and next to the Austrian account,
the latter being to the former as Defoe is lb
Munchausen. Tho New York Times charad
-terizes the account of the French General (FO
rey,) as " modest, decisive and intelligible,"
which is, perhaps, as much as to say not very
Napoleonic. The writers of the New Yorl
Times, however, show a very decided leaning
to the French side, so that their testimony upon
this point perhaps should be taken. as Monk
barns would say owl grant) salis.
ADDITIONAL advises from Utah inform us

public arms in the Territory. The Marshal
has addressed a communication to the Gover

that there are no bodies of armed men gather

organization. General Johnston had prom
ised protection to emigrant trains going to
California, and advised the emigrants to col
lect at some common point, when he would
afford them an escort. The Indians were get
ting troublesome, running off with government

Tax Wheeling Argus (Democrat.) is of opin
ion that both Wise and Hunter's prospect* ft"-t r
the Presidency have been damaged by the re
cent Virginia election. "In the late contest,"
says the Ar.Ous, " neither had a triumph, and
each of them was somewhat damaged. The
result may be that both will have to yield in
the next Presidential contest to a more fortu
nate rival.

should moreover be made as free as possi

from a. corps of Governtrient Engineers,
who made the survey a few years since, that
at a competitively trifling cost, the present
canal around the Falls can be widened to one
hundred feet, with side basins for boats to pass
each other, and by constructing a single lock,
four hundred, or four hundred and fifty feet in
length; and of a width to accommodate the
largest boats, these rapids can be passed with as
little delay, and as secnrely ns nny'other point
of the river. The present canal, when enlarged
according to the plan proposed by the Govern
ment Engineers, will be about two miles in
longtb. A canal on the otberside must ho live
or six miles in length. The cost of a now ca
nal will, moreover, be at least three times as
great ns else enlargement of tho present ono ;
and being longer; it will require a larger an

many yeairs — to come.
