This has long been regarded as the age . of
humbug, - and tho Americans have .the reputa
tion of being the most gullible people on earth.
Until Within a few years; the . sober, steady,
yiloddin g , matter-of-fact citizens of Pittsburgh
have kept comparatively free from the infection
of perialical insanity which afflicts our cousins
who reside in the seaboard cities. But we are
reluctantly forced to the conclusion that of lat
ter days they are as ettOily yip4itulae4 as the
tcf-44y eVidellec of
pie tact. •
Alo4 of our city readers, and many in the
eountry, will recollect finding' under their
doors, a few weeks since—circulars, announc

Willis;!- had taken up her-residence - id-N0..75,
SeCond street. She claimed to be ''the sev
enth daughter of a seventh daughter, and a
descendant of a -line 'of astrologers reaching
back for centuries," and proposed to . show to
ladies, only, for the small sum of one dollar,
" the likenesses of intended companions and'
absent friends, through an instrument which
S.Tie will etittM to;illifminate iind:lthiriuminate
j,self Vv The powers of her woudeillil s&nce,"
iced other equally marvellous itCrilirmences.
tltrange as it may seem, scarcely had her cir
culars been issued, when her rooms were daily
crowded by ladies of every age, eolor, disposi
tion, appearance, and - social standing. She
was, fn fact, overrun with business. At all

A brilliant assembly convened at the elegant

ability on the part of the professor, and a high
state ofoultivation on the part of his charming
pupils, while the tones of his own rich, manly
voice enhanced the pleasures of the evening :to
a high degree.
The sweet music, the elegant repast, the
winning grace of the hostess, the noble hospi

the favored ones present as forming one of those
bright episodes - in life around which the mem
