PITTSBURGH POST.
-
'The Personal ApPearance 'Of Washington.
I saw this remarkable man four times, H.
'•
Was in the month of NoVember, 1798, first
- : beheld the father of our country. It was very
• cold, the North-West wind blowmghard down
• the_PotOnnie, at Georgetown, D. C. A troop of
light-horse from Alexandria escorted hiin to
the western bank of the river. • The waves ran
`high, and the boat which brought him over
• seemed to labor considerably. 'Several thou
, sand people greeted' his arrival with sWelling .
hearts and joyful countenances; the niilitary
were drawn up in a long lino to receive him ;
the officers, dressed in regimentals, did him
homage. I was so fortunate as to walk by his
side and had a full view of him'. Although
only about ten years of age, the impression his
person and manner then made on use is now
perfectly revived. He Was six feet and one inch
high, broad and athletic, with very large limbs,
entirely erect, and without the slightest tenden
oy to stooping ; his hair was white, and tied .
* tvith a silk string ; his countenance lofty, Mas
culine and contemplative; his eye light grey.
'was dressed in the clothes of a citizen, and
- over these a blue surtout of the finest cloth.
His weight must have been' two hundred and
thirty pounds, with no superfluous flesh; all
was bone and sinew, and he walked like a sol
dier. Whoever has seen, in the Patent Office
at Washinolon, the dress he wore when he re
signed his Commission as commander-in‘ehief,
in Decomler, 1783, at once perceives how large
and magnificent was his frame. Dating the
parade, something at a distance attracted his
attention. His eye was instantaneously lighted
up as with the lightning's flash. At this Mo
ment I see its marvellous annimation, its
glowing fire exhibiting strong passion, con
trolled by deliberate reason.
In the summer of:1709 I again saw the chief.
He rode a purely white horse, seventeen hands
high, well proportioned, of high spirit: he
almost seemed conscious that ho bore on his
back the Father of his gountry. He reminded
me of the war-horse whose neck is clothed
with thunder. I haveseen some highly accom
plished riders, but not one of them approach- ,
ea. Washington ; he wits perfect in this respect.
Behind him at the distance of perhaps forty
yards came Billy Lee, his body servant, who
had perilled his life in many at field, beginning
on the heights of Boston 1775, and ending in
1781, when Cornwallis surrendered, and the I
captive army, with inexpressible chagrin, laid
down their arms at Yorktown. Billy rode a
cream colored horse of the finest form, and his
- old revolutionary cocked hat indicated that its
owner had often heard the roar of the cannon,
and. small arms, and had encountered many
trying scenes. Billy was a dark mulatto. His
master speaks _highly of him in his will, and
provides for his support.
Seine time during this year, perhaps, I saw
him at Scone's tavern in Georgetown ; the
steps, porch and streets were crowded - with per•
• sons desirous of beholding the man.
I viewed hint through a window. The most
venerable, dignified and wealthy men of the
town were there—some conversing with bins.
Washington seemed almost a different being
from any of them, and indeed from any other
person ever reared in this country. His court
tenaace was net so animated as when I first
saw hint, for then his complexion was as ruddy
• as if he were only twenty years old.
A few months before his death I beheld this
• extraordinary man fir the last time: Re stop
ped at the tavern opposite the Presbyterian
church in Bridge street, Georgetown. At that
time a regintelitur sehliers-N-as stationed in
their tents en the'laink,of Bock Creek. and fro
. euently attended Dr. Balelia church dressed in
their eestiiiim and powdered after the revolu
tionary fashion. 1 attended their parade almost
ever, - day, and on one of these occasions I re
cognized Washington riding on horseback, un
-so:Temp:tided 1,3- any one. He was going out
to see his houses on Capitol Hill, iss:l supposed.
They were bunt by the British in 1814. 'My
youthful eye was riveted on him until he dis
appeared, and that forever. I was surprised
that he did not (Mee look at the parade ; so far
as I could discover, on frie'ontrary, he appear'.
ed indiflhrent to the Whole scene:
It hai been My 'privilege to see the hest like; I
neSsei of the Chief. 'The one, of all ethers,
niest reseuiblina him is thiitprefixed lithe
yOlnme ef " Lying's I l ife of Washington."
•
All the rest wanted she animation iyhich I per
ceived
in his fertures.
In personal appearance - Washington has
never been 6.0010 by any liken in the United
titates. I agree with Lord Erskine, when he
said that ,tbe Father of his Country the
only man he ever saw whoseeliaraeter he could
not contemplate without awe and wonder. B.

WIIAT Estes:saxes 'fawn:a—Fevers, sore throats, agues,
rheumatism, dropsies, bilious affections, headaches, all
affections of the stomach and bowels, both of a costive
and dysenteric character, and allthe maladies of women
and children, have been cared by the use of Brandreth's
Pills. To tell you that I have paid two millions of dol
lars to make this trial' known, is of itself an nstottnding
fact; and yet never was a truer word spoken. And
what is the result? Why, that about threc, million per
sons in the United States partially believe in the effica
cy, and have a general idea of the benefits to be derived
from purgation in sickness. But what a field for phi
lanthropy! What millions remain to be 'Converted!
And let me say that this • knewledge is second only to
Christianity in the benefits it is capable of conferring on
mankind. Let opt medical men persuade you that
Brandeth's Pills are a 4itack remedy. It is no such
thing. What I sell you for two shillings, these men
could not supply 'for a dollar. My herbs and extracts
are all prepared,in my own laboratory, where a steani
engine of one hundred and forty horse power is am-,
ployed exclusively for this purpose, besides an eaten.
sive water power. In using these Pills you risk noth
ing for they have been used by millions; so that should
you feel disposed to take a sly dose, you will be able
certainly to live through the operation; and you may
have the laugh on your side when the doctor tells you
that lie hit your case exactly with the last mediciue.; Go
on in the use of - the Pills. They will cure you without
hurting your teeth or gums, and in every way improve
your health, Sold at No. 294 Canal street, Brandreth's
