ENE PITTSBURGH POST. i. [From..the correspondent of the NetviTork pest) THE BATTLE OF .11103ITEHELLO. , ALESsii4Dati, - Hay ..e r, 18og. • In My last letter I announced to you "that be- . fore.long I should have news'of a more serious nature to communicate. The events of yester day prove that I was correct in my surmises., An engagement has taken plied between the. 'Austrians and the French; and the litter have gained -a glorious victory. The Piedmontetio cavalry has for some days past been sent ahead of the French - encampments tei act as scouts, and give notice of the approach'ef the enemy, in case such an event took' place. Hearing a heavy cannonading in.the sicinity of the vil lage-of Casteggio, the Piedmontese: went in that direction, and ascertained that the Aus trians were advancing. This fact was at once communicated to Gin. Foray, who commands the division nearest the enemy's lines. De ceived into the idea that it was a simple recon noisatice on the part of the Austrians' General Forey sent Colonel Cambriels with five hun dred men to meet them. Arrived in face of the advancing troops, Colonel Cainbriels found that they numbered at least eighteen thousand, notice of which was at 'Once sent to the com manding general. Here took place ono of those events that cover with glory the actors therein. Colonel Cambriels, at the head of his five hundred men; kept the eighteen.thousand Austrians in cheek until the rest - of the divis ion, about two thousand four hundred, could cone up. A desperate Struggle then took place, and after two hours fighting the Austrians bad to retreat. They could not stand the bayonet. :The French folloWed them up until theycame 'to the village of Montebello, already famous as the spot where the French gained a victory over the Austrians during the wars of the Con sulate, at the beginning of the century. The I villifge of Montebello is on an eminence,, and is a fine stand to make a deterininedresistence. The Austrians fought from house to house, but the fatal bayonet pursued them, and at last they abandoned the place, taking with them a great: number of wounded. General Forey, who was in command of the French division, behaved in such a manner as to cause the sol diers to greet him with loud hurrahs as ho de scended from the eminence ho had mounted to watch the retreat of the Austrians. This fact Is the more noticeable, as it had been asserted that the soldiers did not like General Forey, who had, as was bruited about, behaved with too much prudence in the Crimea. The Gen eral's conduct yesterday was a direct and most complete refutation of these rumors. The Etat- Major of the General, composed of young men, behaved extremely, well during the engage ment. As for Colonel CanibrieLs, he has al ways been known as a Cafftirsibili., and one of the fiercest sebrenrs in the army. The French hive six hundred, men Bars de combat. They, took from the Austrians two hun dred prisoners, among whore a Colenel, who is wounded badly, And twenty officers. Almost the last shot that was 'fired, killed General }tercet; the French army loses in him - an officer of distinction, and a soldier who was adored by his comrades. A great number of Austrians were killed—at least two thou sand. They did not take is single Prisoner. The call roll shows that all the French sol diers are on hand ; those killed were ranged " along the road when his Majesty went to visit the field of battle, which ho did as soon -as news of the engagement reached here. The wounded—many of whom must die—were also visited by the Emperor. General Forey was highly complimented by the Emperor, who embraced him and Colonel` Cairn bridle when he first saw them. lam assured by one of tho French officers, who took part in the engagement, that the riedniontese caval ry behaved well, charging the enemy twice, and cutting them down right and left; they succeeded in capturing a cannon. This is a brilliant entree en campagne for the French, and it will no doubt curse the enthusi asm of the soldiers to increase, if such .a thing •is possible. The Austrians, on the c..ntrary, must feel the iyreatest discouragement to have experienced a defeat when they made the at tack, and in such overwhelming numbers. . just ascertained that the 'Austrian colonel, who Was taken prisoner, has died from his wounds. o. Emperer has returned from making the inspection of the field of battle. I am told by those' who were present that the Most touching instances of courage and devo tion to hiS Majesty were gives by the wounded volition , when they saw him. A special train Is bringing the Austrian prisoners and the wounded soldiers to this place. In my neat letter I shall probably have some interesting details to give you. At present I roust close my letter, as I ant just In time fur the mail. A general move forward is now expected. DEAN. P. "V .Pa. .
