RR.—The engineer corps under Mr E.
M. Leuffer, this week, up to Wednesday
noon, were engaged in making examina
tions for the best route between Linden
llall and a point two miles east of the Fort.
The Fort route they tound a Tory fine one.
about two thirds of a mile shorter than th*
foundry route by this place The rout by
"" Mar. a -light d;.ance south of Cen
tre Hall, proved to bo some 800 tYet shorter
than the Fort route. Both these routes are
cow about being located and estimate
made.

point is the "End of the Mountain.'' The
Sn 'ix shoe company contend it is at a point
nearer Bellefonte than what is claimed by
the other parties, and gives a di-tance cor
respondingly less to be made by them The
difference in distance involved, we judge,
may be some two or three miles.

a fine thunder shower, and during the

and a fall of the thermometer next day.
Si rnEN* Death. —Mr. John Altera,
cfMillheiro, died very suddenly on
lait Sunday; 9th inst.
Mr. John Ppangler, of this place, has
bought the stage line between Centre
'• Hal! and Mittiiuburg, from Mr. Moore,
late owner.
The Egg hill mountain, southeast of
this place, xxas on fire end of last
week and filled the valley with smoke.

Miffiinburg has an act passed* in
the legislature, a fexv days ago, to wid
en one of its streets. If our Miffiin
burg neighbors will keep sober, their
streets will not need be widened.

the Loop, where a large and magnifi
cent stock of spring goods has just
been received, and is offered to the cit
izens of that vicinity at astonishingly

Palsied and Killed. —In
taay Valley, about a quarter of a mile
from Ciintonville, Clinton county, liv
ed David Barner. A few days since
he went out to his stable to see about
bis horses, and whilst among them he
was palsied, falling down between
them. When he was discovered, his
friends were shocked to behold him ia
great agony, the horses having tramp
led upon him and injured his skull so
that he died in a short time after
ward.

Bellefonte says the Pittsbnrg Post,
paid us a call yesterday Mr. Mitch
v ell headed the electoral ticket for
McClellan in lowa and was the nomi
nec of the party in tiie Fourth Dis
trict of that State, against Hon. J. B.
Grinnell in 1804. He will be wel
comed back to hisoldstumpin^ground,
not only by his many personal friends,
but by the Democracy of the State
at large. He informs us that he iu
tends to locate iu Lock Haven, Clin
ton coui ty.

Three Thoueaiul Pcrnons Homeless.
About noon, on Sunday, all at once
the rumor spread that the ice had
started and was coming down. Thou
sands of peoplo flocked to the banks of
the canal, which had been quite tree
from ice in the morning, but where
already heavy masses of ice weredriv
ing down. These xvere only, as it
were, the advance guard of the large
ice fields which were descending. Mes
scngars from the police and the Gov
ernment Commission ran about Ithe
thieatened districts to order the eel
lurs to be cleared, and to look for the
boatmen and the carpenters, who were
to put together the stages, which were
ready prepared; but scarcely more
than an hour's time wasjleft for all this,
