Sewing Machine Dci-
sion.
A Washington telegram of the 2d
says:
The decision in the matter of the
application of Isaac M. Singer for the
extension of letters patent for the im-
provement in Sewing Machines, grant-
ed to him November 4, 1858, which
has been kept secret by the commis-
sioner of patents for several days, was
officially promulgated to day, and is
a refusal to erant the extention as
prayed for. The refusal of this pat-
ent, however, which expires on Friday
next, does not make the use of what is
known of the Singer improvement un-
reservedly available to the publie, for
ti® reason that that improvement is
contained in and protected by other
patents’ which have several years to
run, The value of the decision is
ound in the fact that it probably
eshadows the decisions to be made
'u the case of the other patents expir-
ing in 1876 and 1877. Two millions
of dollars of protection will thus be |
taken off the manufacture of machines
using the Singer improvement, and a
reduction in the price of all kinds of |
sewing machines will be effected, |
amounting to at least fifteen dollars |
in each instance.

Mr. Thomas Mooney lives at Red Bank,
V' est Virginia and reads the papers Among
the items which excited his interest was
one which related how a man with a balky
horse got out of his wagon when the animal
stopped, and sat on a stump reading a Bi-
ble until the animal went on again, which
he did in a very short tme. Mr. Mooney
had a balky horse, so he had put a Bible
in his pocket and went out to try the
experiment. His horse stopped right in
the middle of the main street, and refused
to budge an inch. Mooney got out and sat
down on the curb stone and opened his Bi-
ble. An immense crowd gathered around
and watched him, wondering what in the
name of common sense was the matter with
Mooney. - But Mooney paid no attention to
them, He began at Genesis, and read the
Jible clear through to the end of the Old
Testament, including the Apocrypha—and
there that horse stood as quiet as a statue!
It occurred to Mr. Mooney that perhaps
the horse might be encouraged t go, if he
read a few chapters of Denteronomy out
loud to him. to he begun and went
over about 660 fourteen
eyliables, which so discouraged Mooney's
horse that he began to back, and kept on
backing, until he jammed the wagon
through & $200 pane of glass in a China
store, and smashed a lotof crockery Moo-
