Could you make it whole by erying
hl] your eyes andl nose are red ?
And would’t it be pleasanter
To treat it as a joke; :
And say you're glad ‘twas Dolly 8,
And not your head that broke?
Suppose you're dressed for walking,
And the rain comes pouring down,
Will it clear off any sooner
Be cause you scold and frown
And wouldn't it be nicer
For you to smile than pout.
And so make sunshine in the house
When there is hone without?

Suppose your lask, my little man,
Is veay hard to get,
Will it make it any easier
For vou to sit and fret?
And wouldn't it be wiser,
Than waiting like a dunce,
To go to work in earnest :
And learn the thing at once ?
Suppose that some boys have a horse
And some a coach and pair,
Will it tire you Jess while walking,
To say “it isn't fair?”
And wouldn't it be nobler
To keep your temper sweet,
And in your heart be thankful
You can walk upon your feet?
Suppose the world don’t please you,

Dana and General Grant.
The Now York Sun, a Repulican jour-
nal, publishes the following in relation to
Jeneral Grant, who pronounced incom-
pelent, lazy, neglectful of his duties, una-
ble to comprehend them, and careless in
performing them; his administration
“pad, foolish, weak, cowardly, corrupt,
anti American, contemtible at home, and
more contemptible abroad.” This is said
by one who hasa right to know all about
the situation. Read and ponder:
“As for General Grant personally, we
have neither spite, grudge, nor revenge.
He neverrefused us any personal favor,
for we never asked anything of him, save
only the appoin.ment of Horace Greeley
as Minister to England; and as he sent a
man there who isn’t half as fit for the place
as Mr. Greeley, we have never borne him
any grudge on that account. But toward
Gen. Grant as President we confess that
we cherish a very profound feeling of
disappointment and dissatisfaction. There
were few menin the country whohud taken
morestock in-him than we had, During
the war, when he was digging canals at
¥icksburg, and was on the point of being
relieved from his command, Mr. Dana did
what he could to have him retained at the
head ofthe army in the Mississippi Valley;
and the effort was successful. But for his
agency Grant would the have been sent
back to Galena; and in that event he could
neither have become Commander in-Chicf
of the army nor President of the United
States. :
Next, When he was a eandidate for the
Presidency, we did what we could to secure
for him the nomination of the Republican
National Convention, and then we helped
to get him the votes of a majority of the
American people. All this we did simply:
because we thought it best for the country;
and all we demanded of General Grant
was an honest, sensible, disinterested, and
patriotic administration of his office. Does
anybody think that wastoo much to expect
of him?
But instead of this his administration is
bad, foolish, week, cewardly, corrupt, anti-
American, contemptible at home, and
more cotemptible abroad. It is impossi-
le to speak the truth and deny that this
It is impossible for an independent
ipurnalist, anxious to discharge his obliga-
tions to the people, to conceal or palliate
facts so-fearfal and so notorieus.
The President is incompetent, lazy neg-
lectful of his duties, unable to comprehend
them, and careless about performing them,
He appoints men to office simply because
they have made him presents, or are his
relations, or because some foolish caprice
prompts it. He degrades the country in
the eyes of all the world, and stands
trembling like a coward for fear of a cor-
rupt and bankrupt power like Spain. The
man who saved the nation as a soldier is
covering tis with shame as a President.

A Heroic Woman.
Thestory of Lady Franklin, the widow
of Sir John Franklin, the Arctic explorer,
equals the strangest story that was ever
woven-into ancient or modern fiction. She
but recently reached California, where sha
will sojourn for a short time.
A San, Francisco paper says that Lady
Franklin will remain in California some
ten days, and then returnto England. The
statement that her journey was undertaken
to obtain possession of certain papers found
thrown ashore in a bottle is pronounced a
fiction. Her trip to Alaska and the far
North is said to have been undertaken for
the purpose of approaching, as near as
possible, to the country in which Siv John
Franklin died. This, if true, makes the
visit more touching and heroic. There is
nothing equal to this in ancient or modern
fictioy. The story of Penelope spinning
and watching for the return of Ulysses, is
tame compared to it.
Lady Franklin for years moved Heaven
and the world with her prayers and efforts
for the, recovery of her lost. husband.
‘When it was demonstrated beyond doubt
that he had perished, she mourned in ¢i-
lence for fifteen years, and then, at the age
af eighty, went on a journey of ten thous-
and miles for the sole purpose of coming
near the country in which he died. The
life of Lady Franklin, with thisseonclusion
of heroic devotion, will be finer than a ro

cing the fact that the Suprame Court is lat

of the legal-tender act, in coin, or itsequiva-

tel keapers and others to eall and examine

and he certain of procuring what they buy,
pany led off’ courageously, displaying the
coin, we are informed, inlarge abundance,
and paying out not only the insercst on its
first mortgage loan as $4, 072,000, without
rebate of the five per cent. Governmen
tax, but gave notice also that the amount
svlvania second mortzace and Philadel.
phia & Erie Railroad coupons, maturing
on the 1st of April last, will be paid in coin
on the 25th inst.
The amount of the Pennsylvania railroad
company’s second 6's is $1,887 840, and. of
the Philade'phia and Erie first moatgago
0's is $1,000,000. The interest payment on
these three several items of principal, at3
per cent., amounts to about $325,000, the
premium on which will cost some 40,000 at
the present rate of premium. Following
this lead of the Ponnsylvania railroad com-
pany came the Philadelphia and Reading
railroad campany, which paid interest in
coin, ot its equivalent, on its bonds of 1830
and 1886, and the North Pennsylvania on
its $2,275,000 of first mortgave bonds.
All the large companies are disposed to
respect the law as pronounced by the su-
prema Court, without further pestpone-
ment or evasion. Two or throe of the
smalier companies owing on bonds made
before the passage of the legal-tander act
tfdered curreney in paym nt of interest
due, but at the same time announced the
intention of the company ta tollow, with-
out delay, the action of the larger com-
panies, which was not generally known un«
til too late to make the necessary arrange-
mants for coin yesterday.
The Reading Company, and, we believe,
the North Pennsyluania, also paid the full
interest witheut deducting the five per cent,
Government tax. We are not of opioion
that we shall ever hear anything more of
the threatened attempt to procare a rever-
sal of the widely and warmly discussed le-
gal-tender decision. All debts contracted
before February, 1862, ave payable in coin,
and will be so paid by companies and by
individuals. The officers of the companies
who have in these costly coin payments,
gracefully acknowledged the obligation
and binding force of law, arejustly entitled
to credit in proportions as the amounts
paid were large and the pecuniary induce-
ments to hold out correspondingly tempt-
ing.
While the action of these officers may be
commended for this evidence of integrity
and returning loyalty, we believe-in this,
as in all like cases, that honesty will be
found the best policy, and that more will
be realized in the shape of improved com-
pany credit than the gold cos! of establish-
ing a reputation for fair dealing. Now,
what have the managers of the finances o
the city to say fortheir dereliction by refu-

they dared to move at all, have to go in the

would bring King William 500,000 men—
a force that, with South German aid, would
place him 430,000 ahead of Frunch, allow-

first premiums at the Stale Fairs of New
York, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Indiana,
Ohioand Connecticut, and at National ‘Fair
Maryland Institute, American Institute

It has been endorsed by over five hun-
