THE TURKISH HORROR.
Native Christians Murder Jews In-
Men, Women and Children Slain—
"The Work of Slaughter Still Going
‘On— The Authorities Make No Effort
to Suppress the Cold Blooded Out
rages.
Constantinople, June 1.—A fearful war
of religious intolerance has broken out in
the province of Roumatria, the Metropoli-
tan province of the Turkish Empire in thy
south of Europe. . For some time the native
Christians have manifested a spirit of fear-
ful vindictiveness against she Jewish popu-
lation, who have endeavored in vain to ob-
tain from the government some protection
against outrage and extortion. A secret
movement has been in organization for the
extermination of the offensive Jews, and
the.deéep and deadly hatred of the bigoted
populaée has only been slumbering, await-
ing a vent for its fury. ;
““On'Sunday last, by a preconeerted sig-
‘nal, the Christain populace rose, and the
fearful work of butc hering was inaugura-
ted. At an early hour the houses of all the
Jews were invaded fabd thosé of the och-
pants “who wof8 unible ‘to ‘eseape were
massacred in cold blecod. The fleeing
Israelites were pursued through the town
by the mob, and murdered wherever caught.
Men women and éhildy ad Were ruthlessly
glain. The fury of the populace wus in
flamed by religious bigotry and only ex-
hausted itself for want of victims. In all
butchery prevailed, and thousands of men,
“gromren and children of the repugnant class
were butchered in cold blood. The work
of slaughter still goes onin the interior and
nothing has been heard yet of any move-
ment by the authorities t6 suppress it.
The reigning Prince is absent from the
province, and advan’ age was taken of this
to complete the total extermination. of all
the Jews from the province. Prince Char-
les is hurrying home and energetic meas-
+ ures will atonce betaken'by the Sultan to
“suppress this religious emeute. Mean-
while the fury of the mob continues una-
bated, finding fresh victims to glut its in-
» satiate frenzy. . +

The Radical loves the negra for a purpose
the attainment of politic ends, rays the
Pittsburg Post, The Democrat respectshim
in his position, pities him as’ the subservi-
ent tool of an unprincipled party, and nev-
er fails to-accord to him the full measure
of his rights, or the sympathy which springs
from the common well of humanity. Take
one or two cases, of recent oecurrence, as
an illustration of thesincerity of Democrat-
ic’and Radieal friendship for that unfortu-
nate race; and as the South fnrnishes us
the most striking examples; we will let her
tell the plain unvarnished story.
The Montgomery Mail says:
Since the negro has had the vrivilege of
voting and electing men of his own race to
office in Alabama several of the colored
mombers of the Legislature, elected by
their votes, have died and been buried.
Not one of them was followed to the grave
by a white Radical. The men who used
them in life forgot them in death. We re-
eall the case of the member from Madison
who died a few months ago. It was pub.
lished in the papers at the time and we be-
lieve never contradicted as a fact that the
poor creature had barely a corporal’s
guard of his own race to pay respect to his
remains, and that not a white man who had
courted him while living had the decency
to attend his dead body to the grave. The
same was true we understand ofthe member
from Perry, and that most talented of his
race in Alabama, the late Ovide Gregory,
of Mobile. Unless we most gravely err in
memory, the Radical Legislature has never
even noticed the ‘death: of these colored
members, or passed resolutions of respect
for their memories.
Mark the contrast, In Verginia, the
Democrats or if you choose, Conservatives,
practically gopemating with the, Nagignal
Demaceey, abe’ ith ipower. , The Législa-
ture is filled with ex rebels, whose scarred
bodies and maimed limbs attest their dee
ovtion to the late Confederacy. These men
the Union and for théinegrowhd is nom ore
thanfis a hard nut for the existence of the tree
upon which grows.
The Legislature has been
ed in and Yowt of} Congress by Radi.
cals as breathing the spirit of rebellion, and
is determined to visit vengeance upon the
head of the negro ‘or taking advantage of
the privileges wrung from the hands of a
needy and unscrupulous party by the ex-
igencies of the day. - We now ask the negro
if he is amenable to the laws of treason, to
listen” toa fact. Wihen one wing of the
Capitol at Richmond fell in the other day
a negro Senator namad Bland, was killed
among the scores of white. He was a Radi-
cal, open, pronouneed—vindictive against
the Conservatives and contemptuous of all
advances made by white men to ‘éxplain
the sentiments which should control the re
lation of the tdce.! "When "this Radical
