TOM TO NED.
Dear Ned,—no doubt you'll be surprised
{ When you receive and read this letter;
| I've railed against the married state,
| But then, vou see, 1 knew no better.
I ve met a lovely girl out here,
Her manner js=well—very winning;
(We're soon to be—well, Ned, my dear,
"11 tell you all from the heginning:
[ went to ask her out to ride;
Last Wednesduy,—it was perfect weather
She said she couldn't, possibly,
The servants hadgone oif'togeth or.
(Hibernians always rush away, ;
At cousing futierils to be looking.)
Pics must be made, and she must stay,
© She said, to do that branch of cooking.
% &
5
“Oh, let me help vou,” then 1eried:
“1'1l be a cooker, too, ~how jolly!”
She laughed, and answered, with a smile,
“All right! but you "1 repent your folly
For 1 shall be a tyrant, sir,
And good hard work you ’ll have to
grapple;
So sit down there, and den’t you stir.
But take that knife and pare that apple.”
'She rolled her sleeve above her arm,—
| That lovely arm, so plump and rounded .
| Qutside, the morning sun shone bright;
| Inside, she dough she deftly pounded.
Her little fingers sprinkled flour,
: And rolled the piecrust up in IMASSes ;
I'passéd the most delightful hour
Mid butter, sugar and molasses.
With deep reflection, her swoeot eyes
Guazed on each pot and pan and kettle ;
Shie'8liced the apples, filled the pies,
And then the upper crust did settle.
Her rippling waves of golden hair
In ome great coil were tightly twisted;
But locks would break out, here and there,
. And curl ubout where er they listed.
And then her sleeve came down, and I
Fastenéd it up,—her hands were doughy ;
Oh. it did take the longest time,
Her arm, Ned, wus so fair and snowy |
She bhushed, and trembled, and looked shy;
Somehow. that. made me all the bolder;
Her arch lips looked so red that I—
W ell«~found her herd uponmy shoulder.
We're to be married, Ned, next month ;
Come and attend the wedding revels.
I really think that bachelors
Are the most miserable devils!
You'd better go for some girl's hand;
And if you are uncertain whether
You dare to make a due demand,
. Why, just try cooking pies together.
A woman named Sarah Chaffee, with six
children, ranging from an infant to seven
