A LaArGE FARM ATTENDED BY
ONE MaN.~The farm of Mr. Vausel,
in Macoupin county, Illi, contains
1,400 acres of excellent. prairie land
and is cared for almost exclusively. by
ate owner. The visitor says of it:
“The farm |s entirely surrounded by
same manner into lots of different
sizes, and although a stock farm, the
proprietor keeps but little of his own,
but pastores cattle for others. At the
time of this visit, there were in his pas-
tures near 800 head of cattle, and he
sometimes has 800 or 1,000, for which
lie receives tw o dollars per month for
each animal, The pastures are not al-
lowed to be used early in the spring,
not until the ground is well settled and
the feed abundant. They are never
fed close, but as the feed becomes
short the stock is moved to other lots,
and large fields are left entirely for
winter pasturage. He cultivates & lite
tle corn and cuts 100 or 200 tonsof hay
which he sells in the winter to drovers,
and it is only to secure the latter crop
I'that hie employs any outside assistance,
and is thus under but little expense
and bas not much capital em-
ployed side from the value of his
Tfarm. Under this system, the land is
fot impoverished. The pastures do not
run. out, but are improving every
year." Who will say, in these days of
high prices for labor and low prices
for produce, with the uncertainty of
cropsand the seasons, that with the
money that would be necessary, put
out at 10 per cent. heis not as well
off as if he cultivated a thousand
» '
acres.
The New York Hearld declares tliat
“around the whole harbor of New:
York, and in all the ship-yards on .the
many shores of that harbor, there is,
we believe; but one ship on the stocks.”
This is the result of Radical rule.
They have almost banished American
ships from the ocean, and American
products are. now transported across
the ocean in foreign bottoms. It is no
wonder the whole business fabric of
the country is rocking nnd tottering
under the effects of such a system as
that inaugurated and carried out by
the party in power.
