LETTER FROM ILLINOIS.
F. Kurrz—Dear Sir:—I will endeavor
to write some items from this place, that
will perhaps be read with i:terest by a |
postion of your readers, but I presume there
are those of your subscribers, who are as
well, and perhaps better, acquainted with
t ic western country, than your humble
correspondent; but, the west of three, four,
0: six years ago, is not the west of to-day.
1 often heard the remark made in the east,
why do people wish to go out west, among
the half civilized, away from schools,
zation, but it is all a grand mistake; I grant
the cast has advantages over the west, in
many respects, and will mention but one,
namly, in the east, the rich man has the
poor laboring man completely in his pow-
er; here it is not so; in this country, if a
man is poor, if he is only honest, he will do
well, and any man of small means can ea-
sily secure a competency for himself and
family if there be the least spark of perse-
verance and energy in him. We have in
this town, excellent publie schools, good
churches, plenty of business places, a pla-
ning mill, foundry and steam grist mill.
This town is situated on the L. C. R. Road.
A large public school is now under way.
A great many new buildings already com-
menced, in fact, the town is improving ra-
pidly; lots that could have been bought
2 or 3 years ago for. §75 to $100, now bring
from $200 to $400. Forty new lots were
laid out in the west end of town last week,
and I presume they will soon be sold.
We have had rather cold weather this
spring, so far, but still there is nothing to
complain of. 1 was agreeably surprised on
my arrival here, to find Mr. B. Clapp, for-
merly of Centre county, located here; a
good many Pennsylvanian: are settled
around here; if some of the farmers who
are toiling and laboring among the grubs
and stones in “old Centre,’ were here, they
would verily believe themselves in para-
dise ; six or eight years ago, there were
large traets of prairie land unoccupied, now
the scene has changed, everywhere as far
the eye can see, you behold farm houses:
just think of it, you, who give the best part
of your daily toil to enrich your landlords,
tolling through the long summer day, your
plough striking against a rock or stump,
nearly taking your breath, think, I say
what would your feelings be, after Plough.
ing (not just one day) 8 week without stri-
king a stone or stump; Ww. on would be.
come lazy, and perhaps the first thing you
would do, would be to send east for a car-
Joad of stones, to scatter over your fields in
order to have them remind yon of former
gimes.
The fruit trees give promise, so far, of an
abundant erop. This year, winter grain
looks well ; the farmers have been very bu-
sy the past week, sowing their spring grain,
s regards the cost o living, I believe a
man can live as cheaply, if not chegper,
here than he can in the eastern states ; we
ay $6,560 per bbl. for foyr; 25 per 1b, for
utter; 124c per doz. for eggs and dry
oods, groceries, &c., are about the same
ere as there. |
This being my first letter to yoy from
this place, I will not occupy much more of
your space, byt will endeavor at some fi.
ture time to give you some news that wil]
Pre to be of more benefit to your readers,
left many friends in Centre who I know
would be pleased to hear from the west oc.
casionally, and I would say, subscribe for
the Reporter, and 1 will endeavor to keep
———— ————— a A A
you posted in regard to what transpires
around here.
A word to you farmers in the neighbor-
hood of my former home-—if you ure tired
of toiling among the rocks, tired of climb-
ing hills and mountains in order to reach
market, come out and take a look at this
country, and my word for it, in nine cases
out of ten, you will buy yourselves a home
before you leave. Good farming land ad-
joining this place is held at about $100 per
acre, but from six to ten and twelve miles
from here you can buy splendidly improved
farms at from $35 to 845 per acre, and a
man with a large family of boys, could do
well, as he would be at no ‘expense for
hired help. No danger for a man coming
here from Penn'a if he is a laboring man,
but what he will find something to do. Me-
chanies get good wages; farm hands com-
mand from $20 to $35 per month; some
come wost with the expectation of getting
rich without labor, such generally gO AWRY
disappointed and then say the west is a poor
miserable place; indeed it is a miserable
place for idlers. More anon.

The Latest Scientific Invention, the
Calorifie.
To give some idea of the peculiarities of
the stove in question, me may state that by
a highly scientific and patent arrangement
the excessive heat on the tup of the stove
whic 1 causes the centre pieces to burn out,
is earcied neound the oven, equalizing the
heat »f the s ove, and casing the bottomn
cf the sven to be just as hot as the top part
of the stove; by this arrangement, there-
ore, all danger of burning vat the centre
pieces (usuni to all cooking stoves) is cf-
foctually obviated. What is more, the
fire aod oven cia be easily reralated toany
degree of heat, by means of this paceat ar-
range ail, thus avoiding the necessity of
IVIL ga Stove consianl attention W hile |
akin z, ia order fo prevent it becouing too |
hot or too cold; naodhes adyaninge wich
this stove possesses to persons who use bi-
luminous coal, is, that by the aid of the
patent in question, it consumes the latter
as readily as anthracite; in short, the Ope
ration of this stove, which is as beautiful as
it is efficient, leaves nothing to be desired.
We would also state that these stoves can
be readily supplied with a patent copper-
back boiler, by which all the hot water re-
quired in a family, can be heated by the
waste heat from the stove. To persons re-
siding in the country, this stove comes as a
special blessing, as it affords them all the
advantages of a cooking range, with none
of the annoyances; a water-back can casi-
lv be attached to it at a trifling cost, which
will heat water equal to a cooking range
without the inconvenience or expense of
having a runge built in the fire place. We
will take the liberty of suggesting that to
persons about going to house keeping, too
much importance cannot be attached to the
necessity of having the best possible cook-
ing facilities. The great feature that it
does not require constant attention, that
when the oven is once fixed, there is not
the slightest risk from carelessness or neg-
lect, and that the temperature of the stove
is absolutely unitorm at the top and bot-
tom, are alone sufficient to eclipse all other
stoves in use, we would advise all persons
who think of nurchasing, to call at the
ware-rooms of Isaac HaupPT, near the de-
pot, at Bellefonte, where he keeps all of
