Monin CENTRE HALL REPORTER. FRIDAY, FEB., 19th 1869. Radical Extravagance. During the session of our Legisla- ture for 1868, the Radicals had nine- ty-seven persons employed in and about the House, at salaries ranging from eigoteen hundred to seven hun- dred dollars. Many of these officials did not labor two hours in twenty-four, while some of them drew their pay, but were not present more than one week while the Legislature was in ses- gion. It is interesting to note the man- ner in which persons are multiplied in connection with certain positions. For instance, there is a Chief Clerk, an Assistant Clerk, and a Resident Clerk. The united salaries of these officials foot up $4,764. What use there is fora Resident Clerk, except to draw money from the treasury, is difficult to perceive. Then there Is a Sergeant-at- Arms, and as the House is - dade a Stove-pipe, Tinware and Drills and Threshing Machines, both for 4-horse sweep power and 2-horse tread power. Also the Tornado Seperator that will out-thresh any machine ever bro't to Centre county. Isaac Haupt at Bellefonte, Pa., and Haupt & Co., at Milesburg, Pa., have already got a new supply of Spears’ Anti-dust Cook, Parlor & Heating Stoves; also, Spears’ revolving, Light illuminating stove ; Spears’ new orbicular gas-burning parlor stove (castiron cylinder): These have all proven themselves to be the best stoves in the world for burning either wood, hard or soft coal; they sieve their own ashes, make no dust, economize fuel, and are the best bakers in the world and have more conveniences than any other stoves now in use; people in want of stoves would do well to call at their ware-rooms and see their stock before pur- chasing elsewhere, as by a neglect of this they may be sorry, as many have already been. SPEARS’ ANTI-DUST GAS BURNING COOK STOVE, (wood or coal,) BPEARS' ANTI-DUST GAS-BURNING PARLOR STOVE, SPEARS’ REVOLVING LIGHT ILLUMINATING STOVE, we claim for these stoves perfect cleanli- ness; in poking the fire, entire safety of the fire; dor require very little attention; secure thorough ventilation of the room, the first quality; great economy in fuel; neatness, cheapness antl beauty, supposed to consist of a host of fierce nine assistants. To pay these “men in buckram,” $10,713,00 is abstracted from the taxes each year. The Door- | Keepet, a most exhausting position, is flanked by five assistants, and the uni- ted pay of this band of patriots sums | up 85,466,10. Then comes the Chief | Messenger, with a comfortable stipend, | and expectations, and his labors are | lightened by the co-operation of eight assistants, some of whom are paid over | one thousand dollars for three months’ | service, with permission to absent | themselves whenever they see proper. But the leakage for méssengers does not stop at this point. There isan ad- | ditional messenger to committee-rooms | —pay, one thousand dollars, and a | coat-room, who pockets a like round | and comfortable sum. As the rotun- | da must be kept free from pugilistic | exhibitions on the part of the members, | a Marshal is appointed. shing his baton, eight hundred dollars | 1s paid, while .a Door-keeper for the | rotnoda is compensated to the tune of | seven hundred dollars. After this ple- | thoric list comes the anaconda of Sup- | erintendent and Assistant of Folding | Department, with forty-five pasters | and folders. The leavest sum re- ceived by any one of these worthiesis | one thousand and thirty-three dollars, | For brandi- | lightest, seven hundred and three. | The aggregate of cost in this one de- partment is monstrous when compared the work to be done. There are one the House, and to do the folding and and pasting for thisbody requires the labor of forty-seven persons, the pay of amounts to $36.787,00. He pouches one | thousand dollars. The whole expen- | ses of the House for 1868’ were 882, | 719,10. Bat the present session will | ghow a still larger amount, as twenty- | seven additional officials have been placed upon the pay-roll. This is an example of the reckless extravagance inaugarated, fostered, and encouraged | by the Badical party in this State. Each year the outlay mounts up, and | the people are more heavily taxed to | meet the demands upon the State Treas- ury. The “Ring” has friends, tools, | and agents to pay or silence. That can more easily be done in Harrisburg than in any other place, and hence the increase of officials, and the concequent depletion. of the eash balance of the Commonwealth. can see where such a practice must land the State. - Will they aid in defeating a party which upholds it. Sensible men —————— ———— — New York, Feb, 10.— An inci dent occurred this afternoon, which fully shows how thieves and burglars | hurl defiance at the law and are confi- | dent that, on all points, they are stron- | ger than our poli ce force judges, juries | and all. After the adjournment of the Court of General Sessions, while a depnty sheriff was conveying three burglars, who had been sentenced to | four and six years from the new Court Houe to the Tombs, he was surroun- ded by a crowd of men, one of whom handed a key to one of the prisouers, with which he at once unlocked lis handcuffs and ran off. The sheriff, before commencing his pursuit of the run away, left the remaining two priso- ners in charge of two citizens on the street, but hardly had he left, when the same erowd furnished the prisoners with knives, which were brandished in the faces of the citizens, who, of course, not over desirous of being cut end stab- bed for work that ought to be done by the police, let the culprits go. The first prisoner has been, recaptured, but the two others will never be found, © > { | J 1 “Not guilty,,, said an Omaha jury, “but if the prisoner is smart he wil] leave the territory before night.” He left.
