We received, a few days ago, a pamphlet of
some twenty pages, printed at Charleston. and con
taining a letter to the Governor of South Carolina,
on the state of things in the South, and particularly
on the project of a Southern confederacy It is the
production of William J. Grayson, formerly
a Representative in Congress from the Beaufort
and CoPeton Diuri a • of South Carolina. All who
had the pleasure of serving with Mr Grayson must
haven favorable and respectful remembrance of
him as a gentleman, not indeed prominent as a
door member, Ism as a man well known to pouess
an unusually sound,reflecting mind, and of unblem
ished purity of private life. lie signs his name to
tl.e letter, as well he mny do, without fear or shame
for even his most inflamed opponents must admit
that it is such a production as, whatever side it ad
vocates, is highly creditable to the author. It in a
