judge Woods Locofoco, is elected Governor by a
targe majority, owing to the split in the Whig
ranks by Free Soil., As far as Congress and the
Legislature are concerned, the prospects are far
from discouraging
Congress. —The Cleveland Democrat sums ap
the result, as far as heard from, as follows:—lid*
gerton. Old*, Swectrer, Busby, Greeu, Hoagland,
Carter, and Disney, all Democrats, are elected
Harper, Whig, is elected in the Mu«kingum dis
trict, in place of Evans, Whig. t-ieji.Jiel! io place
of Mr. Schenrk, and Mr. Welch m place of Mr.
' Vinton.
All the above named districts stand politically
the eamo as at last election.
Judge Newton, Free Soil, is chosen 10 the Trum
bull District, in place of Crowell, Whig, aod Towns
end in place of Hoot, Free Soil, m the Lorain
District.
Mr. Giddings is re-elected by trom n to lo,Ooy ms.

the WJilga have gained one Senator —Dr. Schorl*
zer, in Stark, and re-elected their Senators io the
Huron and Erie district, and in the Jefferson and
Harrison.
The Democrats have elected their Senator in
Lorain and Medina—in place of Mr. Blake.
■ In the. House the Democrats have lost 1 in Cos
hocton, 1 in Jefferson, 1 to Cuyahoga, oue la
Guernsey, one iu Franklin, one In'summit, end
have gained one in Licking.
From tbs present appearances, there will be an
anti.Lirofoco msjniity in both branches of the
Legislature.
Excrrcuxxr in Detroit. —The Cleveland Dem
ocrat, of Wednesday evening last, nmlained the
foliowing account of a slave, excitement m Detroit-

—Day before yesterday, a Southerner arrived at
Detroit, and claimed a colored man os hi* slave.
The greatest excitement ensued. Toe colored
people rallied, and the Military were ordered
out! -
Under armed escort ha was taken to jail! Yes
terday about 10 o’clock he bad his trial The mil
itary, having guarded the jail all night, appeared
in force, and conducted me colored man to the
Court House. The crowd around there was very
great
It la said a hundred, or so colored men came
over from Canada.
The result of the trial is aol yet known.
P. S. evening at 0 o’clock ha was thrown
into jail to await his trial. Jail guarded by the mil
itary. He will be tried as aoon as certain paper*
are received from Cincinnati.

The examination of the Fugitive Slate took place
today. Scott’s GnirdiGrmy'* Guard, and the Doi
ted Slate# troop#) accompanied the priaooer Irom
the jail to the court room, with loaded musketa.—
No attempt* at rescue were made by the negroes,
and others, who h«d collected about ibe}ail fn hun
dred*. Some atones and brickbat* were thrown nl
the Marshal 7 # carriage. The negro wa* #enl to
jail for a week, to await for evidence, when the
ixowd'dispersed.
