The President alluded to Gre.ltell's letter to the
Texan members of Congress, publshed in the
&Merin of Friday lent, and says that portion of the
Territory Ego of the Rio Grande hen been replied
as belonging to New Mexico. tie thinks toe ex

power to local; and she has no artthonty which
can coed ct with the lam, or the rights of the

The President take. decided ground that the
territory In diepote, east of the Ego Grande, be
goes to New Mexico, and for that reason he maw •
protect it loom the inue, ioa of Texas, or any o ber
State. He believes that the treaty with Mexico
extends the laws of the United Stales over the

He will Celathelf to regard said territory

question to tberoontrary.

must do his duty. He hopes for an immediate
settlement. , . •

Tug Fins Airra—Vie paid a Visit, 'short time
Mice, to the studio of Mr. Isaac Craig, in Burke's
buildings, and examined with much pleasure,
some of his beautiful paintings and sketches. One
large oil painting, in particular, attracted our Men
tion. The idea is taken from the New Testa
ment, where our Saviour says, "Come unto me
all ye that are weary, and heavy laden, and I will
give you rest." In the fore ground stands our
Saviour—his countenance glowing with a heavenly
love for the poor mamma of mink. lids figure is
noble and majestic. yet, joined with this very ma
jesty, a holy pity and self dental are visible, which
render the whole expression inexpressibly touch
ing. Sneeltrig at his feet, with clasped hands and
streamingeyes, is a sinner, oppressed with the cares
of this world. Every lineament seems to ask tor
givness for the past, and to entreat hops for the fu
ture. Our Semmur has his rums extenderl, ea ii
boam to raise the trembling wretch before him,
and welcome him to the haven of rest, so ardently
desired, and yet scarcely espented. g purple robe,
emblematic of his load of sins, has fallen from him,
and by his side atm& an angel, Mimi to clothe him
in a white garment. Rarely indeed have we seen
a painting where the conception was purer, or
more happily curia ... and It will odd mach to
Ithe reputation of this hammed young artist. We
are informed that Mr. Craig Intend. to rend it to
the Philadelphia Academy of the-Fine Arts, and we
have no doubt that the good taste of the inhabitants
of the city of Brotherly Love, will not allow us the
pletuure of again seeing it in Pittsburgh.
