Mr. Dawces ohje . e - t,d to this proposition.. The

Mr. Dawson defenied the administration from
the imputation. T.ho d.P.lctalty had arisen from
tho amount of bonds required from the Sub.

Sobtressury Department would have felt anther.
load to reduce the amount of bonds, whelp...the.
sums placed in the hands of the Treasurer had
greatly lecteani. The President rent to the
Senate the nomination of n Subtreasurer en' the

Prmissonun, April 9, I&AS
the formation of this association, our design
Was principally to gain access to that worthy, yet
suffering class of society, who, through sickness or
accident are reduced to poverty, yet suffer on, rather
than seek the cold charity of the world.,
The system of visiting, which we have adopted,
has succeeded beyond our expectations. The ef
forts we have made to relieve the necessities of
those coming under our observation, have been,
with the exception of a very few cases, success
ful. We have visited and assisted fifty five fami
lies and individuals, twenty six now suffering from
sickness as well as poverty, many very respectable
and worthy persons. Ten were very aged and infirm
iThelemaining nineteen were suffering from various
causes, such as intemperance and !dinners. Some
have reformed and are doing well. Two of these
families were found unworthy of assistance. Our
subscriptions and collectons amount to 578,65 eta.
Tracts and Bibles distributed, 510,00; clothing,
3147 00.
Our hearts should be idled with gratitude to our
Heavenly Father, for permitting us to be the hum
ble instruments in his hand of teak iog glad the
hearts of the poor and destitute, and of bringing
comfort to the homes of many stricken and desolate
ones, that were stoking under the prepare of the
belief that no man knew them and no nian cared
for their souls.
We have found muds pleasure and much bene
fit resulting'from the union of the different denomi
nations with ow own in this association. Baptists,
Presbyterians, Lutherans, Episcopalians, and Ger
man Methodists, have met with us from week to
week, for the last eighteen months, and we have
yet to learn that one unkind word has ever been ut
tered, or one -unkind feeling ever existed. All has
moved on harmoniously, and we have acted ia
concert, as members of one church, bound for the
mum bright city above. We would thank the sue
ters of other, clsurches for their cheerful co-opera
tion with us-:their rennet pease wilt be from Him
w w r o rid, acold of water given in his earns
ore i t.
reward.
We are grateful to our kind friends who have
given as their influence end prayerw.-wo,bg,*2_,
there am many such, and are encouraged 'to go Ob.
We shall, therefore, continua to meet in the La
dies' Depository, Smithfield M. E. Church, every
Tuesday afternoon, as musl, to devise means for
the relief of the sick and destitute. We design
using what little influence and energy we may
have in behalf of the Sabbath School Temperance
cause. Bibles and tracts distributed as opportu
nity may occur.
Having become more established and settled in
our views and plans, we hope to be more efficient
in the accomplismeat of the one object in view,
that of doing good. Knowing our own weakness
and inability to do any good thing of ourselves, we
would rely upon and ask the assistance of Him to
whom we owe all we have and are, and in whose
service we earnestly desire to employ all our ran
somed powers.
