Having shown that the central lines of 'railroad from the Atlantic to the North West, through Fitts burgh and Indianopolin must be much better lines for transportation, and for travel also, if the local and the through travel are both considered, than the frontier lines along the shores cif the and that Goat Indianopolis, the communication to the warm North of a West line is much more important than to the country South of that line, I now proceed to acquaint the reader with the progress of reads in Indiana, and West of it, bear ing upon this commerce. So comprehensive are the interest. of Pius% burgh, and so commanding in her position that the view of the subject will be too limited if we con fine our attention as to the roads emerging East from Indianapolis to the single line which is the one of your first adoption. The: Madison and indinnopolia rail road, well known to the public, whose course is about N. N. W., was flinched to Indianopolts . to the fall dint, It is 56 miles long, and for 56 miles at its lower end is bald with a heavy T. rail. The remaining 30 miles is the beat fiat bar road in the country. Its earnings, during the unfavorable season of ISIS, were $213,1b0 69. Its cost minuet be fairly stated, as twenty eight miles next to the Ohio river was built by the Slate under the expensive system of 1535, ao t a vast amount expended at the Nudism hill. A better guide can be formed in the report of the Presider,. of February, 1017, which net down the cost of conistruction of the 59 miles built by the Com. pony, (then nearly completed) at 5120,000. This madees originally planned by the thste war to havel extended to Lafayette. Tut.. breaches from the North East have elreitily liven ven.truet ad in o this road (partly HOW in tire, and the iron engaged, nod the grade finished fur the tesitluej whose united length is about 70 miles. A third branch from Jeffersonville to tap this road at a central point, Columbus, whose length he 61 miles, has now 27 miles !laded, and the non, T rail, no the ground. Between Cincinnati and Indienopolis Revers' lines art, projected, some of which have been un dertaken. On the Lswrenceburgh route, the ere- Wig has been contracted, from Lawrcnceburgh to Greeneburgh, near 50 mile's. On the other mule, by way °Marathon the work is under contract betweeril Cincinnati and Hamilton with a pro posed extension through Rutbville to Indianoper it Tao tame roate extended to Dayton, will form another !Melo Indianoplis by way of arch mond, or engraft heel( upon the It slleloniniue and Indiana line, neetOreenville. It in highly proba ble that the completion of acme one or these lines from Cincinnati will not be long delayed. The third principal hue from the East, now in a state of forwardness, is the Ind...yobs and Bel lefontaine road, thirty miles of which out of Indi m•polis will be laid this Beeson. It r oDoce d• self directly with the lines leading to Pittsburgh, through Gellion, !dawdling), and Beaver, and is so familiar to your readers an oat to need tardier remark. - Thu. there are three grand converging lines coming from the South and East into Indianapo• lie. The valor of either of them will be greatly increased by an extension to the navigable wet• en of the Wabash river sod canal, and to the pro ductive and cultivated pranks of that valley; and as the best and nearest market kr the heavy pro ducts of Middle and Western Indiana Is the lakea, it follow. that an extension to Lafayette will be touch more profitable than to any point lower down the Wabash Canal. Three eaten. Woe. have been proposed from Indianapolis to the Wabash river, vim to Pens, to Leyayette, and to Terre Haute. The two latter contemplate crow ing the Wabash river with extensions respective ly to Lake Michigan and the Missisaippi. That through Terre Haute is the direct mote to Saint Louis; the one through Layayette is the direct route to Chicago, Galena, mad the Capital of to we. is another number I will dose the series , with • few remarks on the subject of the two last nam ed roads.
