The Board of Managers of the Allegheny coun
ty Agricultural Societyj met in the Hew Court
House-on Saturday'morning. • - r .
John McCloskey, of Baldwin Township, was
called to the Chair, and John Murdoch, Jr., of
Peebles, appointed Secretary.
The following aemkera were present:—Messrs.
Murdoch, Martin, McCloskey, Way, Cooper, Car
nahan, McGiU, Gerrard, McCaalin, Kelly, and
McCabe.
The Committee appointed to wait on. Mr. Hen*
ty McCormick, to inquire into the propriety of
founding a model farm in Allegheny oonnty, read

Gettlxum—Knowing jlbat I could not make* it
answer to meet |you as a Committee, I intimated
to Mr. Mordock that I would commit to wri
ting what I had to say respecting an “ Agriculture]
School.” Owing to my impression of yoar meet
ing next week, I did not bring it along with me,
and as I liro outside the city, could not gel home
in time to have the report ready for yotxp meeting
this morning. •
What induced me to calling your attention to the
subject of the school was, as you were prominent
in promoting the “ Agricultural” interests of the
country, it rery naturally occurred to me that you .
would recognize the establishment of a school far
the eneouragementof so necessary and useful a
science. Agentlemaa proposed furnishing a farm,
provided 1 could get some friend to procure means
to erect Buildings, &c-, bence'the’cause of my look-,
ing to you for aid.
My business now is such that I cannot meetyoo :
Allow me to give the outliaca of the required school
Fifty or aixly acre* in a good airy location is ground
enough. Suitable Buildings to accomodate from
50 to 100 pupils with barn, stable, and other out
houses, also greenhouse, dec. The number of
Teachers, one Pnticipal Manager, one Professor
: of Chemistry, Botany, fee., with an gsabtant la|lbe
English Commercial Department. If required, a
Transient Teacher of Masic,'French and Latin
dec., doc. Two good laboring men to; attend the
Farm and Stable, dec, dee. This would answer.
The idea of compelling boys'to work for a cer
tain number of hours'oo the Farm, to assist in pay
ing their Boarding, Taitton, dee.[ is erroneous. The
labor performed by them should be considered a
Privilege, not a Task! Shouli] be granted them
for good.conduM, doc., together with training them
to r'.de, exercise, and every code of'ifreagtt.
cning their system and promoting health. In fact
the school contemplated should "bo one of moral
training moro than mere laboi'. But while this
moral training would progress, the foundation of a
science, more uttf ul to than pbn toddy at large
would be laid. And thosoboyr, after spending two
or three years, conld then, if they or their parents
deemed it proper, torn their attention lo.any branch
of business or trsde more congenial to their wish*
es. *And ir place of being obliged to hire (when
they came to tbo possession of a Farm or Garden)
some one to instruct them and attend their place,
they could'supcriotond their own premises, skilful
ly and tastefully ornament their grounds, &c. I
fear my friend, owing t* the delay, has thrown his
capital into another channel. Sti’i you conld easi
ly raise means for so laudible aa object, by obtain
ing a charter from our Legislature and put it into
the shape of a joint stock institution. I submit
these hist suggestion* for your especial considera
tion. The amount I think required, exclusive of
the land, for buildings, dec., would be about $5,000

Remarks were made upon it by Messrs. Mur*
doch, Martin, Way, McCloskey and McCabe.
Mr. Murdoch, of Peebles, represented ia an ex
ceedingly neat and forcible manner, the necessity
for o model farm. He also gave the meeting
moeh valuable information on ths manner in
which similar Institutions were conducted in Great
Britian. Y -
; On motion, the meeting adjourned until half past
one o’clock.
Tbe Board met at half past one o’clock: -
The following resolution was adopted:—
Ifae/tW, That a committee ofthree be appoint
ed to petition tbe Legislature for an appropriation
for the furtherance of Agriculture in Allegheny
County.
Meters. Scott, Martin, and McCabe, were ap
pointed on that committee.
Five hundred copies of the Eye Laws of the
Society, and one thousand certificates of member
ship were received from Mr. George Parkin,
Gaaette Buildings.
An animated discussion ensued, on the propriety
of tbe Society recommending a fair to be held for
the purchase and ale of all kinds of stock.
U was finally resolved that this Society recoin*
mend to all pemna having stock of all kinds to
dispose of to assemble on the Comitions of Alle
gheny, on the last Jueedsy of April.
Premiums will be.awarded to tbe best three
stall ions, hut for nothing else—at ill tbe advantages
arising to tbofe who wish to dispose of their stock
will be great, at, owing to the large crowd of
•apcctalora—'farmers and others —good prices may
be expeeted. Farmers and deals re in stock, in
all tbe neighboring counties, and from Ohio and
Virginia, will be in. attendance, and the free inter
change of opinion between the different farmers
and graziers, must be beneficial to all. We" have
no doubt that an immense multitude will be pre
sent. N
Messrs. Garrard, Cooper, and McGill were ap«
pointed on the committee to make arrangements
for tbe fair of slock.
On motion, Meters. Kelly, Murdoch, and Saively
were appointed a committee to make ont a list of
premiums for tbe next agricultural fair.

Into Mr. Wilson’s jewelry wore, on Saturday, and
requested to look at some gold watches, as his
mother and sister wished to purchase two. He
requested the jeweller to step round to one of
our betels, where be said they were stopping.
Taking two fine geld watebea and chains, worth
upwards ot 9300, he went around, and was
ushered, os ho thqught, into the' swindler’s room,
who left him there, taking tbe watches up to his
mother’s room, and leaving bir hat. After some
time, Mr. W. began to suspect that he was duped,
but the reseat had had lime to make his escape,
-end was not to be found.
DismcT Court.—The' District Court was in
session on Saturday, and the argument list was
taken up.

DisTuißancx.—There was qnite -an excitemeo r
in tbe Fifth Ward, on Saturday night, between
eleven and twelve o’clock, on account of sn at
tempt mode to rescue a prisoner from the hands
of the police. Mayor Barker, however, was soon
on tbe ground in propria pertona with a reinforce
ment, and order was speedily restored. Two of
the night police have been suspended for their
cowardice on this occasion.
MAYOR’S OFFICE.
Saturday, Jan. 26.
Frederick Marten was slightly inebriated last
night, and refused payment for a supper of oysters
which he lad obtained. Frederick could not re
collect any thing about the circumstance, so he
was orderod up for ten days, to give him time for
collecting his thoughts. ,
Wn. Daily was comilted for twenty days, fori
vagrancy.
Several huekalera' were fined for breach of tber
city ordinance.

Oliver Brooks was fined $3 and committed ten

THE following article we copy with pleasure from
the “Boston Mercantile Journal,” of March, 1649,
and vre hope that if any ef ear readers are r uttering
from any of tha/complaints which it U said to cure, '
they will speedily avail themselves of it:
DR. WISTAR’S BALSAM OF WILD CHERRY.
It was well known many yean ago that the wild
cherry bark tree of this climate poisoned valuable
medicinal qualities. Indeed this foot was known to
the aborigines, and decoctions of the leaves or bark of
this tree Las ever bodri regarded by theirphysltians as
one of the most effectual remedies in caiijr~<ii*£&*eiu'
This fact, severe! years since, arrested the attention of
Dr. Wittar, a highly respectable practitioner of Vir
ginia. He investigated with care the healing proper
ties of the wild cherry—tested Its effects when admin
istered alone, and when is combination.with other re
medial areata. Ho found that ita natural virtue might
bp greatly improved, and by combining it with Ingre
dients whose properties were all well proved and gen
erally recognised, a medicine was produced whleh

ry affections and dis uses of the chest and throat—

ment, was attacked with a violent cough and great

history of my afflictions, and the benefits derived from
