(h Steamboat Bulldlni
' [We have, with considerable trouble, obtained
from the Custom House books, the following statis
tics of steamboat building, within tho Pittsburgh
District, during the past ten years.
But few, even in our own vicinity, have an ade
quate idea of the extent of steamboat building at
Pittsburgh, and of tho great increase to per
centage In this branch of business from year to
year. Pittsburgh has -well established her fame
in reference to this branch of mechanical laboii
and so great baa been the number of boats annu
ally set afloat by the persevering induttry and en
terprise of oar city, that scarcely a river, lake, or
gulf it to be fouod, from £te .head waters of the
Ohio to the far oIT West end South, whose com
merce Is not wafted from shore to shore by the aid
cf Pittsburgh steamboat enterprise.
The.subjoined u an annual'exhibit of the num
ber of steamboats built, and- entered at the Custom
House, from 1810 to 1819, inclusive;

There were also, during this period, six Iron
Steamers, for lake and ocean navigation, built at
Pittsburgh, but not entered at the Custom House.
They are as follow*:—lst. The Michigan, barquo
rigged, sow on the upper Lakes. 2J. The J-/«
ftrson, schooner rigged. This vessel was put up
temporarily at one of our shipyards, then taken
flown and shipped to the lakes. 3d. The steam
er BiU, schooner rigged. 4th. The Ilunler, sebuo
ner rigged. sth. The Allegheny, ship rigged.
6UI The Waller, schooner rigged.
•Of these steamers, Iwd— the Michigan, and the
Allegheny—were U. States war steamers. The
others were revenue cutters.
: We add to the above list of iron tteamera built
at Pittsburgh, during this period, the Valley Forge,
She was built for the PitUburgh;trnde: and after
.performing good service, her cabin was transfer
red to the ateamer Robert Morris, and ’her hall
torn up
' With but few exceptions, the steamboats co
talced in the foregoing list, were built for the tradi
immediately connected with Pittsburgh; ami a 1
they were worn out by use, destroyed by the
‘accidents incident to navigation, or told out of
tho trade, they were replaced by new, larger, and
more splendid smamers—always sustaining n reg
ular increase in number, from year to year. And
[j worthyot remark, that by this regular proci
of steamboat operations, new ideas, new plan:
ImprovemeU, sad inventions have been introdu
ced, so as always to present, through the enter
prise and skill of oar capitalists and mechanics
tbits cf the very latest and improvcdjttylc of con
siioction, both in the power nnd elegance of iht
machinery, and the magnificence of the cabins,
end other upper works. •

BALSAM OF WILD PHERRY
'THE fallowing articla vge eppj with pleasure from
the “Boston MPfokhtilo Journal,* of March, 1840,
and we hope that it any of oar readers are Buffering
from aay of the complaints which it is said to cure,
they will speedily avail themselves of it:
DR W 1 STAR’S BALSAM OP WILD CHERRY.
•It was well known many years ago that the wild
oheny bark tree of Clunate possessed valuable
medicinal quahtie*. Indeed this fact was known to
the aborigines, and decoctionwof the leaves or bark of
this uee has ever been regarded by theirphysieians ay
one of the most effectual remedies In many disquiet.
This fact, several years since, arrested the attention of
Dr. Wistar, a highly rcipeeutblo practitioner of Vir
ginia. He inyegUgsted with care the healing proper*
tiej of me wild oherry—tested its effects when admin
istered alone, and when in combination with other re
medial omits. He foand that its natural vinne might
be greatly improved, gad by combining it with ingre
dients wnose properties were all well pi&ed and gen
erally recoguuuJt <1 medicule was produced which
constitute.* a remedy of great importance in pulmona
ry qiLft*ons and dis uses of the chest and throat—
disease* which are proverbially prevalent in our cities
and large towns, and often prove fatal, swelling the
bill of mortality to a much greater extent than is the
case with most others, we ho<l almost slid all elkiscs
of disease.
she genuine Witi&r*s Balsam of Wild Cherry has a

To the afflicted, this may certify that Mrs. B.‘ Rob

Snostration. and seemed hastening to the grave with
earful rapidity. I advised her to use Wlstar’s Balsam
of Wild Cherry—she did so, and with that valuable
medicine alone was restored to health, and is now a
living proof of the valoe of Wtstar’s Balsam of Wild

Physician and Druggist.

Messrs. Sandford A Parkt Genu. As a mattsr of jus

offer the following stutemeut of a core effected by your
medicine, known us Wistar’s Balsam of "Wild Cherry.
In the spring of 1847 ray wife was severely attacked
with Peripneumonia, or Pleurisy, which resulted in a
deep seated pain in the side, accompanied with 1 a se
vere cough; she was attended by some of the best
physicians in Chicago, but to nd purpose; for weeks
•he suffered, without relief, coughing incessantly night
and day. I oame to the conclusion that all the reme
dies inonubo the physicians could opt help her, and
was induced u> try your Wild Cherry. Iprocuredone
bottle, and commenced using it according to direc
tions; before it was all gooo—the cough stopped, the
Kin m her side left her, and with the aid of another
ttle she was restored to ruarxer nasLTtL In con
sideration of these circumstances, I would rceommend
it to the public as a valuable medicine.
Yours, respectfully, R. N. GAR&ATT.

J • D. Pure: Dear Sir, As 1 have a deep commisera
tion for the afflicted, permit me to give you a brief
history of my afflictions, and the benefits derived from
the use of Dr. tViiur’s Balaam of WUd Cherry
In July, 1544, 1 was attacked with a fever of the ty
phnd character, whieh left too in a very debilitated
state, when in the following winter I was takeu with a
severe cold, which Yedueea me to sueh an extent as to
rve me the uipearancu or a confirmed consumption.
labored under a severe cough—expectorated agreat
deal, sad was troubled with eold feet and night sweats.
I also frequently raised blood from -my lungs. 1 con
tinued in this state, gradually ktakiu under tho dis
ease, until January; 1847, when 1 was again attacked
with fever. My friends despaired of taylife, and my
EUytioians thought 1 coum survive but a short time.
If extremities, especially my feet, were constantly
cold, and almost lost their feeling. Under these cir
cumstances it may truly bo said that 1 was a living
skeleton, i finally determined to quit taking medicine
presertbed by physicians, and try Ifcr. Wistar’sßalsam
of Wild Cherry,, and from the first week ihsi I com
menced taking it, 1 can date a gradual recovery. 1
continued its use six months, at the end of which time
I was cured, and have enjoyed good health ever since,
and cheerfully recommend the Balsam to all those af
flicted with diseasa of tho lungs, and would say to
ihoao commencing iu use, not to he discouraged if two
or three bottles do not effect a tore; but persevere us 1
have done, sad 1 have ha doubt but mat cases ail of
ten will lie blessed with renewed health stlhavo
