To the Ren. he Minister, an,/ /iv/iv Eiders
of the Presbyteries of Erie and Meadville,
commonly known by the appellation Of "Old

Rev. AND Dean Barrinurs,—Grace and
peace be unto you! Yon are, hereby, aftec
tionately informed that on Monday 2d, Mon
day 10th, and Tuesday 11th inst , fraternal
conferences have been held in this city, for
several hems carh session, between minis
ters and elders of the two .hranches of the
Presbyterian Church, commonly called Old
and New School, in view of re-Uniting the
tiro bodies in Si astern Pennsylvania. That
these conferences were held in the Lecture
and Session Rooms of the let Presbyterian
church; and that the Rev. Drs. Herron,
Campbell, McGill, and the Rev. Memos.
_Howard, Lee, Jacobi and Johnson, ministers
of the Old School; and Rev. Dr. Riddle, the
Rev. Messrs. Nathaniel West, a. M. sp a 4s,
and B. F. Wallace, ministers of the New
School, together with a large representation
of Ruling Elders of both particle, were pres
ent. The conferences were opened and
closed with fervent and solemn prayer, at
each session. . .
The musts and curs of the schism in tht
Presbyterian Church in Western Pennsylva
nia formed the chief topics of conversation.
I. The causes of division. They were
shown to lie—

Speed of Pittsburgh, is one, without differ

It therefore appear**,
2. That such a sep aration in this region,
and wherever found in Western Perruisylia
nia, is clearly Contrary to the word of God,
destructive of the publio character of the
Presbyterian Church, and a. formidable bars
rier to couch extension, and that immediate
and snitsole means ought to be instituted to
effect a re.union, because no justifiatile cause
can be shown for a continuance of the separa
tion.
111. The methods proposed for re-union.
These were
1. That both parties should unite at once
with's' the bounds of the Presbyteries of
Ohio, 0. S , and of Pittsburgh, N. S.
2. That jointcommittee should be raised W'
to correspond with the Presbyteries of Erie '-

V. Reasons advanced in conference for
reetnion. Some of these were—
t. Those stated -under the head " Cure," ,
Nos. 1 and 2; and in addition.
2. That the words, "tie receive you,'" or
"you receive us," shall not be used, but a
reuninn shall be sought on grounds of
Christren muddy.
3. That on reuniting, no examinations
shall be instituted by the Old School !teeth
' ren on ministers of the New School, but such
as are exercised on their own ministers irt
their transference from one Presbytery to
another. ~
4. That the excinding act, so called, not
reaching to the churches within the bounds
of the Synod of Pittsburgh, these chruchesl
remaining firm in doctrine and order since
the division, though now divided, should as
soon as possible reunite, and become one!
body a,.,eirin. I
5. That the movement toward re-union
commencing with the Old• School brethren,
and the truly Christian spirit manifeeted-by
them, as well an the general character of the
Christian spirit manifested on the other side,
and the particular avowal of brotherly love
by all the speakers assembled in conference,
involve solemn responsibilities somewhere,
if this attempt at teen:lion should fail,
6. That the general body of the *ashy
tenae people of these cities and their env
tone, as well ag other Christian denomina
tions, would greatly rejoice at to-union in
our body. And,
7. That by re-onion, the moral influence
of our Church on the community around
worth!, it is believed, be very largely ad
vanced, and Church extension greatly pro
moted. - I
Those confetences have furnished to the
committee raised for correspondence, the
loregning facts and arguments, which the
committee now forward to their Old and
New School brethren-of the Presbyteries of
Erie and Meadville, hoping that they also
will iinmedeedy institute a fraternal iconic,-
ence on this vital subject, and transmit to
the chairman of our conference, Hen. Hat
met Denny, the result of their delibrations.
In conclusion, it is added, that should a.
meeting of delegates from Pittsburgh, Erie
and bleadville be-proposed to meet;at Mer
cer, the brethren at Pittsburgh are ready to
meet their brethren of the Northemi Presby
teries at that point, in the humble 'hope of
aiding in fully consummating an event so
desirable, and which is believed 'to be
fraught with, the best blessings to the Pres.
byterian Church in Western Pennsylvsnia,,
and perhaps to the whole of oar Aieloired
Zion throughout the vast domain of there
Unitell States.

,The reason forimbhthing the paper adop

for coirespondence, are:
: 1. That distorted representations might

. 2. That all our people, of bock „aides, and
the Clinician public., might have the fast ,

before their minds, in the order in which
they occurred, from the fwd Jai of the hr.•

• “Without difference in either doctrine of
church government" This statement ap.
plies to the charches of the New School . in
i .,
Western Penns) . vania, as churche s, not to {he
body of the MI b'obol as a body, because
the New SehOol 'metal Assembly, sincethe
division of 188 has made the Synod instead
of the General 4asambly the ultimate court
of appeal, made Itha General Assembly pnn
cipelly an advisory covet ; and changed from
annual to triennial .meetings. This makes
somesome "dilierenee in church goveriiipt," in
relation to the body, as a body.
