Churches,that the Trustees of the Seminary have

of Allegheni City for the sum of $35,000. The
Trustees ham reserved one acre near the foot of
the hill

they have retained the right to occupy the Semi
nary building, until they can erect another. The
money is secured by bond and mortgage on the
property,anilthe interest on the money will com e

dbonnent fund, Will place the Seminary in a very
stumg and independent position in a pecuniary

There are at present eight persons confined in
Ike St. Louis county jail, on the charge of murder

for lulling Samuel Refferman, on
Almond street; George Leunbert and his with, for
killing Michael Donovan, in the vicinity of the
'Prairie House' George W. Lansdown, for killing
Captain Elovrint, err Second street; two tidians,
for kilruut Mr. Colborn,a Santa Fe trader, on the
plaids; Gonzalve end Raynard lktontesqiiion, for
the late murder at the City Hotel. The cause,
one instance, may be traced partly to integicatinn; in
in another, to original iii entered dtsposition and a
final fatal quarrel; In another no jealousy; in an
other to a desire to steal; and in the last—none
- can be even guessed at.
The. Board of Commissioners on Claims analog
idealco convened yesterday. lion. C. B. Smith
and Col. Robert T. Pure were in attendance.
Quite a number of memorials were presented for
the action of the Board; but in consequence of the
absence of the Hon. Crwrge Evans no business
was tranucted.
We shall endeavor to keep our readers advised

Commonwealth vs. Joseph Dowes, John A.
Bowman Stark, and Simons, charged with forging
• bill of exchange, and thereby defrauding Messrs.
Tapley and Best,Merchards of this city,-frandulent
ly, obtaining goods from that firm to the =mutt of

fined in jail in the State of Michigan under • Change
of Annuli and Battery with intent to kill. Stark
and Simms appeared, and pleaded "not guilty."
The indictment contained six counts. Both the
defendants were young moo.
Enter appeared on the part of the Common
wealth. Messrs. Williams and Shinn for Simons.
and John A Wills for Bowman. Before the trial
commenced, Mr. John A. Willa wished to move
for the discharge of Bowman. He had been corn;
muted on the 21kh day of March, rt• e con
had commenced its autittp, and before the Grand
Jury had been discharged. They remained in
resident several weeks after the Information had
been relented to the Attorney General, thus gin•
tag him ample opportunity to proceed ageing the
defendant at that time. He therefore claimed his
discharge under the Act of 'B5, the habeas =pus
act. He contended that the March Term was to
be regarded as the first term of his imprisonment
He had been detained in prison during the June
Term, without trial. This was the second
Term, and as the case was not permitted to be
continued, either at the instance of with the eon-

tled to his discharge. The record of the June
Term did not show any cOntionanno with or with
out the consent of the defendant. .Application had
been made to ledge fours during the June Term,
but ho refused to discharge the isoner, oar the

The Coon decided that it was for the Attorney
for the Commonweidth to determine whether he
would or would not try the ease ..iciring the term
at which the defendant had heel committed. It

term, and the priaoner was bound to answer, the
Commonwealth now being ready to proceed to
Mr. Wills then applied for a continuance oath,"

absence of a material witness. True Court directed
the trial to proceed.
Mr. Saloon then requested that Simons should
be tried eeparately, but the Court refused, &Region
