A serious disturbance took place at an annex
ation meeting, held in Quebec; Jaat Saturday.—
This Mayor refuted to act in quelling the riot, and
several of the moil wealthy and influential citi
seua of Quebec hate signed the annexation man

new* from California. From Jamaica, we learn
that the new tariff bill ha* received me sanction

THE ILLINOIS ELECTION FOR UNITED
STATES SENATOR.

The election of n Senator for Illinois, resulted
|ait Saturday in a vole of 72 for Shield*, 21 for
Cyril* 'Edward*. In tbo previous caucus Ilreesc
ran Shields dote, -shield*' was renominated in
caucus on the twenty first bailor, by a majority cf
four,
The Senate pa*sed a resolution of adjournment
to next Monday. .
AWFUL TRAGEDY.

An awful murderous tragedy t« oL place last
night in Barnum’s Hotel, in thie city. Some few
d*ya since, two young French gentlemen, calling
themselves Counts Gonrales and Raimond de
MontetqniW, arrived in the city from Chicago, aud
pdt up at Barn am'* Hotel, representing that they
were on a hunting excursion through the west.
Nothiog particular was notifced in their manner*
until'lari night, when about 11 o'clock, P. M., a*
Mr. Baroom (nephew of the proprietor) and J. J.
Macomber.the steward of the house, were retiring,
one of the French men came to a window on the
gallery and tapped lightly. B&rnum pushed the
curtain aside, when the man in the outside fired a
gun, a ball from which passed through Barnum,
and two buck shot struck the arm of Macomber.
At the report of the gun, Albert Jones, a coach
maker, on third street, who occupied ‘an adjoining
x6om,niahed to the door of the gallery, when he
received-a shot through the hfcad and fell dead.
.Two gentlemen who had olio entered the gallery
’ were struck with back shot. H. M. Henderson
- -'Vas wounded.on the forehead j W. H. Hubble, of
Liberiy.'Tim the arm. The assailant was immedi
ately punned to hi* room, and alter a severe strug
gle, was secured. * He Is the younger of two bro
then; both were arrested, and affected to bain- 1
none. Barnum is still living. It appears that they
mafcc a aimilar attempt on a landlord at Alton,
some few days since.

The trunks clothe brothers Montesquise were
opened this evening; letters were discovered io
them proving them to be Parisian* of wealth and
family, together with splendid equipment* and

They are evidently insane. Both fired the fstaj
abets: Beth refose to employ counsel, and say
they will plead their own cause, justified by the
order of God. Albert Jones, who was baried this
evening, wax shot by an ounce ball and sixty six
large abol.a,
The Mayor baa ordered out a Strong police force
to protect the jaiL The rest of the wounded are
doing well.

the Emperor ol Russia has banished to Siberia.
