The case of the Cammonwealth Ira Rudolph
Seltzer, indicted for committing an assault and
battery, was again taken op this morning, and sev
eral. witnesses were examined to prove the good
character of Mn. Cracow, and her daughter.—
They wore unanimmis in testifying to the amiable
character of both thebe ladies. This was alemal
the only case since the commencement of the pre!•
eat term, in which speeches want made by the
counsel.
Mr. Mahon, on the part of the prosecution
made one of the aunt eloquent and beautiful
speeches we have have ever heard delivered in
Pittsburgh. 13e had a fine field for the display.of
his talents, and made the most of it.
Mr. Wills made quite a lengthy speech, m de
of his client.
The Judge charged against Seltzer, and the la,
ry, after a 'Mort absence, brought in a verdict of
"Guihy."
Commonwealth va. Andrew Harper. Lediot
ment Larceny, committed In Ideating two cases of
surgical instruments, from Dr. Ahl, of Bayard"-
town.
Harper maiounned Unit he had bought tbem
from some person whom he did not know, for two
dollars, but ail he could Rot prove this, be said that
he would plead "Guilty."
Commonwealth vs. Peter Blaokson. Surety of
the Peace. The prosecutor In this case was Lauts
Ocknor.
The quarrel, as it appeared Gym the testimony
of the witnesses, arose from a wooden trough or
sewer.which, beginning Blackson's house, ran
into Ochnor's, and into which, as some witnesses
emified, bones, pieces of meat, rags, and other
nuisances were thrown, in addition to the water ,
which it was designedler carrying off. On the
contrary, one witness on the part of Blocher, '
swore that nothing but water was thrown into it.
-Blackson, who is a colored man, and Ochnor had
a quarrel abontit, and Blacken told him that he
had been a slave in Germany, and did not know
how to appreciate liberty here.
Black - son hod, it seems, from his own statement,
corroborated by those of other witnesses, used ev
ery exertion in his power to keep the sewer
clean, and make Ochnor comfortable. The bosses
occupied by both parties, belonged to Blaskson. -
Each party was sentenced to pay the coats of his
own witnesses, and Blackaon to pay the docket
costa.

Commonwealth vs. John Smith. Indictment—
Larceny. The übiquitous John Smith, was charg
ed with having stolen
. a quantity of wearing
apparel from Eli Neel, of Lower St. Cltil Tp, to
gather with a promissory note for slsoXnd a con
siderable amount of money. Smith was arrested
on the Hibernia No. 2., on which boat he was a
fueman. The case was submitted to the jury
without argument, him Neel testifying positively
to the fact that the larceny was committed by
Smith After a abort absenre, the Jury returned
with a verdict of "Guilty."
Commonwealth vs. Michael Shay. Indictment—
Larceny. Shay was charged with stealing one
Cole of surgical Instruments from Dr. AhL
The counsel far the defendant did not deny that
histient vas in possession of the instrument. ,
and called Andrew Harper, to prove how he did
so. Harper maintained that Shay was guiltless,
as he had given the instruments to him. Mr. Cal
bin here arose to make a statement concerning
Harper, who this morning pleaded guilty to an in
dictment, charging him with stealing the Insum
meats alluded to. He said that he had been ac
quainted with Harper in Washington City, sad
that he was a man of family. That he was pm.
muted of considerable real estate in Washington,
but that he'llad bees adjudged by the Courts there,
incapable of - managing it, owing to his imbecility
of mind. For some time past he had lost sight of
him, and If he bad known who he was, would
never have suffered him to plead guilty in the mom
ing, as he believed that the statement which hehad
made was tem. The jury were directed to bring
in is atialetl verdict unthit morning,. _
The Grand Jury Came into Court with-e ItAt
many bills of indictment, chiefly for assaults and
batteries, which they had Ignored. Moat of the
prosecutors were directed to pay the czars, and
several of them being unable to give security
therefor, wens acht to jail.
Qum= Woak—Among the bills ignored,we no
ticed the cross indieunents preferred by Mr. Thos.
McKee, and Marshall Orr against each other. Mc•
Kee's information before Ald. Madame.s was only
preferred, and it was immediately ignored. Both
parties gave security to pay their costs, and were
discharged. We advise nil our quarrelsome and
litigious citizens to beware how they dispute with
their neighbors, m both the Grand Jury and the
Court are dealing very summarily with all snob.
Commonwealth vs. Hugh Spencer. Indictment
—Larceny. Plea—" Guilty." The sentence in
this cue wee deterred, as there ie another charge
pending against him.
SABATeIa Comairrrxx—We rejoice to find that
the above Committee are acting with energy and
promptitude, and we are rum that the public
health will be much beoefitted by their labors.—
Many abominations which have for years existed
amongst us, have been removed, and altogether,
the members of the Committee deserve the hear
ty thanks of the community for their praiseworthy
exertions in the cause of health and cleanliness,
which, Indeed, are almost synonymous terms.
DnTH.—A German, named, we believe, Gee.
Martin, died on Tuesday in jail. Oar readers
may, perhaps, recollect that we some time ago
celled the attention of the public to his distressing
situation. Peer Martin was a lunatic, and one of
that clam with whom the close confinement of a
prison cell did not agree. Shut out from the
world, he pined for a small degree of liberty, and
has been lingering on, between life and death, for
some months past. If we but had a lunatic asy
lum in our midst, he might have recovered hi■
senses, ea hisinednees was never of a very outra
geous type, but the "golden bowl Is at last Woken,"
and "the spirit bath returned to God, who gave it.. l
Poor fellow! he is happier now than when in life,
for his was not a happy madness. Surely we will•
before long, establish a lunatic asylum here, for
none of us can tell the moment when it may be
come necessary, in the wisdom of an omniscient
Providence, to deprive er of reason.
AlMlLT. — Robert McCoy yesterday appeared
before Alderman McMaster., and swore that a
man named Kinsey had made an assault upon him.
Kinsey had put some lumber upon a lot rented by
McCoy, and, when he was asked to remove d,
refused. McCoy then attempted to remove it
hiamell, and &am read him with a shoe maker's
knife. When this was wrested I rem ham, he pick.
