and most splendid building la the United Staten,
and tat superior to the Capttol at Washington. The
building itself coven, one acre of ground, and the
walls, floors, stairs, and roof arc all of white mar
ble, agreeably to the will of the founder. It is sur
rounded on all the four sides by most Znagmficent
white marble colt:nine, tithe Corinthian order; the
diameter of them in seven feet, and they an: fifty
six feet high, exclusive of the base, (the latter nine
feet in diameter The formals, which are most
xplendidly anti ciatArately carved, are thirteen feet
toga. The colonnade, as you wail: tin. the platform
of it, has a most imposing and splendid appearance
—more vt than any thing of the kind I have ever
seen. The roof,. t a real ounostty, and, with the
exception of the cathedra! of Milan, is the only
buildtng I have ever seen or read of that is exclu
sively of marble. The slabs arc all of uniform size,
and are about lour feet square, and three inches
thick, overlappmg en each ether, as they descend

are in a straight line from the apex to the eaves,
and are well joined and cemented; but, in order to
render them perfectly water-prool, they are again
covered by narrow amps of marble, nine cr ten
