SAN FRANCIS2O, March 3, 1346.
We tualled tram Panama on the let February,

A most angular aisle Of things prevails here. It
a, I believe, without precedent in the history of the
world. The cold weather and snow have driven
all the miners trom the mines into thin place and
Monterey. They arc devising all Sorts of modes
01 apending their gold and killing time, of which
gambling appears to be the most in vogue. In fact,
there a nothing going on here but gambling and
drinking. Every thing is selling very high at re
tail, whoelsale prices are more moderate. Flour
$l9 per barrel, pork 3150, beef $l6. All kinds of
thick clothing very dear; cloaks at retail 5100,
coarse pants 512 to $l9 per pair, &tunel sh.rts
to 37 each, shoes $9 to $l2 per pair, boots 313 to
523, blankets $3O to 10, butter $1 per lb.; broody

There are in thin harbor about forty merchant

aboard, there being few places ou abate for storage.
The greater portion of these vesaels are from the
South American Pacific coast, and are freighted

some are from the Sandwich Island. with sugar,
fruit, &c. The variety of flags among the shipping
strikes one with surprise; there are American, En
glish Hungarian, Sparkish, French, German,
Eeua
dor, Peruvian, Chdialt Raster, and:Mexican vessel,
all huddled together. Labor, especially mechanical,
ia high . carpenters command from 57 to S 9 per
day. A man with a horse and cart can earn from
54U to sf.io per day. Board is quite reasonable un
der the circumstances—iS3 and SI per day being
the usual price , washing is Sti per dozen, sdi is
frequently paid. A seamstress can easily make
or 530 per week, making pants. \Food is $3O
per cord. Nearly all the vessels in port are with
out men, theirisads:are bent and stowed away in
the hold, witb perhaps the captain and mate aboard,
as ship keepers. The Caufornia heal:wen al port
four days, and the crew have all pelt, engineers
and all.
All we heard to the Suttee about the gold mines

9rIHE subscnbers beg to call the attention of Builders,
Arelmects and owners of Buildings, to the many
advantages which these plates possess over all other
metallic substances lothena used (or roofing, Ac., as
they possess at once the llghtneas of iron, without its
liability to rust, having now been tested for several
years in this particular, both in this country and in Em•
rope. They are less liable to expansion and contrac
tion from sudden ohmage of the atmosphere, than com
mon tto platen, iron, Rine, or any other metal now used
itir roofing, and 'consequently form a much better and
tighter roof; requtring far less frequent repairs, whilst
the first cost is but a trifle more.
