I have been on shore but a short time, and am
heartily surpnsed with every thing that I see.
Speculation of all kinds is rife, and exceeds any
thing I ever witnessed in Mississippi to the palmy
days of'2B and '7. Town lots are held at the most
exorbitant prlces, end every lot-holder is worth
from filly to two hundred and fifty thousand dollars.
I have yet had no mean, of aseenaining the state
of affairs generally, as I was prevented from going
on shore yesterday in consequence of a severe
d, but cannot but belleve that there is an Doan
tural and fictitions value placed on every thing.
which will soon be corrected. Merchandise and
labor are extraordinary high.

You may Judge what a state of adage exists when
common laborers can go to the mines and return

We re-publish the series of letters, on the true
Pathological nature of Cholera, by Geo. Stuart
Hawthorne, M. D, late of the Belfast General Got
piutl, and now of Liverpool, England. From en
introduction to these letters, in a pamphlet publish.
ed at Nashville, we learn that the author has had
at least, as extensive experience in the treatment
of Cholera as any other Physician in Great Brr
tale. That his success in the treatment of it has
been extraordinary, is placed beyopd dispute by
the highest and meat conclusive testimony.—
Boards of Health, Physicians of good reputation,
private iudivaduale and public meetings, all unite in
testifying to his unexampled success. The Dan•
aannon Board of Health, in presenting to him a
piece of Plate, take occasion "to convey to him
their most grateful ackaowledgments for the (mi
ncet services he has, under Providence, rendered
in checking that de,tructive disease, which had
raged with such violence amoopt them" The lett.
Dr. Dawson, if Dungannon, a highly respectable
and able pracutnner, who changed his origins
,nede of treating the disease af,er his 'Talus idea'
of it, in con-equence of "the most important rotor
motion" be had received from Dr. Hawthorne, had
been corrected, says, in a letter to Dr. H., writen
in 1614. -Would to God, my dear air, your mode
of practice in Cholera, was more generally known
•is then it would not be so fatal a eenurge as it on
l'rtunately now The late Sir Francis Work.-
loan Macnaghten, in firwarding to Dr. Hawthorne
Hakes of Bi!ly and Hunluce, says:--1 can add
from my own knowledge, that no individual, who,
Si :ho commencement of his disease, had the for
tune to foil under your care, was lost to his fami
ly, that, „partly after your arrival. mortality cease&
—that unilteit reliance upon you was manifested
by all—rind that despair was relieved by the most
cheering expectations"
In the address, the signers, among whom were
Physicians, members l of this Board of Health, par
ish officers and private citizens °file highest res
pectability, say, "that not a single death took place
in any of those cases which occurred subsequent
ly to his (Pr. H's) arrival. Three Of the signers,
Physicians and Surgeons, and members of me
Board of Health, add: "We, the undersigned, feel
it our duty to express our most unqualified con
viction, that your plan of is the best, and
the only safe one; and that if sufficiently early tad
efficiently put in practice, even in the most Vio-
lent farms of the disease, and universally adopted,
it is calculated to save many a useful lifis, and
render a most formidable disease comparatively
mild, and less fatal than moat other epidemics.
