VALUABLE INVIItTION. —We saw on Saturday, in
the engine room of the Factory of Messrs. Kenne
dy, Childs dd Co., an invention which only needs
be known to come into general use. We allude
to an instrument called a Manometer, which antis'
factonly show. the pressure of the steam on every
square inch of thu boiler. Thu it does with the ut.
molt accuracy, and ts so cheap, and BO little liable
to get out of order, that one should be connected
with every steam engine.
The Instrument consists of a glass tube, inserte‘
in a bath of mercury, and a graduated scale.
It Elders from a thermometer in this respect, that
from the tube of the thermometer air has been
wholly excluded, whereas, in the Manometer, the
air is compressed by the rising of the mercury,—
When the steam is turned on to the bottom of the
Manometer, the inurcury instantly rises, and as
the scale is properly gradated, the engineer can
tell at a glance the pressure fur every square inch

Gammwoon Gaanci —We paid a visit one day
last week. to this delightful place of popular resort ,
and were very highly pleased both with the gar
den and with the manner in which the whole ar
rannemeuts are made. The saloons are spacious
and every delicacy of the season a always to be
found there. Then there are howling saloons, end '
swings for those who like them; end a stroll
through the walks, bordered with the moat beauti
ful dowers, will amply repay any one for a visit to
the Greenwood Garden.
The fine sieemer,"ThommiScott; Captain Van

little boat, and make. the trip down in about seven
minutes, and up in ten or eleven minutes.
Gititase, —A largo log raft which was floating
down the river, yesterday afternoon, bagged the
shore no -closely that the hands on the steamer
"Despatch" were afraid it would strike the boat.
They therefore cut her from her moorings, mad
endeavored to steer her clear of the raft. They
were unsuccessful:in tneir attempts, however, as
the raft struck her in the wheel, breaking it all to
pieces. This woe fortunately the only damage
which the boat sustained.

'the lands embraced in the shove proclamation are
located !principally on and adjacent to the litmstrompt
and St. Orals Oven. Those designated as mineral,
e extremely valuable; because m addition to the
copper rod other ores found in them, they axe well
watered, and have readraccess to market, either to
the South, by the blmaisstppi river, or to the East, by
the way of the lakes, and the several lines of commu
nication that connect therewith.
Valuable umber and all aline necessary requisites
for budding and smelting; are found in great abun
dance, and of the fine. quality. The climate le heal
thy sod plonsern— the cold being rarely more Interne

the lands aro exceedingly fertile, producing all the
