tare of Mr. Roberts, at the Hall last evening, on the
great .abject of our Railroad connection with the
West, was numerously attended, and ara must say
that that gentleman handled the subject most ad•
imimbly. The lecture was quite lengthy, occupy
;Mg nearly two hours in delivery, and we very
much regret that the lateness of the hour ut which
we write, forbids us making soy attempt at a gen•
end review of the extensive field which it covers
ed.
The importance of immediate action au this
great work, by the citizens of Western readilylva
nia, was strongly urged by Mr. Roberts. He ad.
veiled to the efforts making by the State of New
York, to draw off the Immense trade of the West
from the Pennsylvania Central Route, by a props•
sed railroad along the lake from Massillon to Buffa
lo via of Cleveland, which result would be a death
blow to the interests of Pittsburgh, as well as to
oar sister city of Philadelphia; and that unless the
people along this line will seise upon the present
opportunity to save themselves, the result will be
disastrous in the extreme.
As this lecture has awakened a deeper Interest
upon the neuessity of immediate and decisive no-
Cowin the proposed railroad improvement, we may
take occasion to advert more lengthily to it in our
next.

writ of Habeas Corpus, and discharged. He - lelt
the same evening in the Brownasilla boat for Bala
timore. en route for California. Ilia liabilities, we
learned from the gentlemen who were in pursuit
of him, were $2,000. They telegmped to Comber•
land, to have him arrested, and jell in the boot to
night for that place.
