The hardship consists in the fact that no draun hasn't is allowed there on goods that nave paid duty in the United States. Co LOCAL -MATTERS, COI7IIT OE gIIAILTER SESSIONS FamAr, January 5. In our paper of yesterday, we reported at length ; an argument in the Court of Quarter Sessions, re. lades to the case of Matthew A. Black, chars•' ed with the murder of the negro Sounded The question as to the power of the Court to take bail was very lengthily argued by Mr. Staunton, and closed by a written otatement from Mr. Siglam, the Attorney General, stating that it was not the imeu• Lion of the Commonwealth to ask for n conviction , of murder in the let degree. This settled the question of the discretion of the. court—bail being a right guaranteed by the con stitution in all cues except in felonies of death. We understood that the counsel for the defence mere desirous of making an arrangement with the counsel for the Commonwealth to take the depoai• dons of the witnesses out of the slate, as they could not be compelled to attend, and the court had no power to make any order in the premises. The Counsel for the Commonwealth refused this, stating that they had the testimony of credible witnesses as to the whole facts, and that the wit. flosses, whose deposikons the defence proposed to take, wore strangers, and unknown to the prose. tine. The refusal wificertainly injure the cause on the part of the prosecution, and create a strong sym pathy in favor of the defendant Public justice re quires that the defendant should have every rear. oneible opportunity of procuring testimony, and a little legal difficulty ought, not, and unseat be allow. ed to stand in the ',way without operating mate tinily in favor of the defendant. ASMULT wan BllTTlDlT.—Elizabeth KlSibbbs was indicted for assaulting Bridget Harrison ;on New Years' day. It would seem from the relative apt 'pearances of the two parties that the situation of things should have been exactly reversed, and the party indicted been the proseentrix, for she bore evident maths of violence. The testimony, however, was all on one sidm— After a short absence the jury returned a verdict of "guilty." The prisoner was then fined 6.1 cents and corm, and be imprisoned one week in the county Ail. MOTH= CASE 07 ASSAULT AND HATTKILY.—Rob art Moffat emu indicted for throwing 4 lbs of but. ter into the face of Margaret Wrigbt. The defend% crepe a store on Wylie greet; and the husband of the complement bed gone to purchase some buuer from bun roe evening, a short time ago The bet! ter turned out to be not very good, and the corn• plainant took it book to the store the following morntng. The defendant refused to take the butter back and words ensued, upon which the defadant threw the butter in the complainant's face. Mr. Bighorn, for the prosecution—Mr. Snowden fin the defence. The defendant called witnesses to prove that the complainant maa • troubleaamc and violent wo man and that he had never thrown tee butter upon her at aIL 'Tba pity the time of • court and the public hould be occupied with such paltry ""•ea Verdict--.oailty." Another trumpery indictmet occupied the court the:rest of the day, in which a:man of the name of Bonbrake was charged with purchasing an old chain, 23 feet in length, knowing it to hare been stoke. There appeared to be agood deal of hard rancorons leeling on the pert of two of the aril nesse, for the prosecution--father and nn—tlie latter claiming to be the owner of the chaia Thecourt will bear argnmenta this ramming, and the whole of the business is expected to be fintah. ed during the course of next week.
