Fassra.m.--During • stay of nearly bar days'
at this place last weirde, occtsioned by badtvesther,
impassable roads, and the Mal of every kind of
conveyance, we ,ivrailed ourselves of an; hour's
situation to look al the improvemeuts of the coun
ty town of Vuuattra. During our short ramble
we met Judge McCalmoat, an old and valued ac
quaintance who escorted us to the New Court
House, recently erected in that place. This is a
neat, plain edifice:,cost the County about 810,000;
and was superintended by Mr. Win. Bell of War
ren. to whom the mason work does great credit.
The jury moms are all large and commodious, and,
the Commissioners' and Prothonatary's offices in
every way adapted to their uses. In the Court
maim, to the left of the Judges' bench, bungs
portrait of the old crier of the court, which is said
to be art admirable likeness. This old man has
now reached his hundredth year; was the first cri
er of the; coons of Venaogo, Butler, Mercer and
Ctawkird Counties, and although not expected to
survive very long, still clings to his office with
pertinacious tenacity. The painting was executed
at the cost of public subsciption—a sufficient evi
dence of the old man's worth.
Onlesiving the Court House we inquired 'wheth
er theite'Were anyMber improvements going CM in
the tow6, - and were referred to a new tavern which
is to be opened in a few days on Water street,
about ten rods from the steam brat landing, and is
the property of Kr. J Turner. The same gentle
man assured us this was going to be the beat haulm
in the whole county. We repaired to the new
tavern stand where we saw pointers, paperer',
loiterers and o variety of others busily at work to
have every thing ready for a "warming" and open
ing on New Year's day. The house is situated
opposite the mutat lock on French Creek, and as
we have already said within ten rods of the land
ing of the steam boats from Pirtsburgh Its front
is 55 feet with a range of 66 feet on Water street.
It is divided In the centre by a'spaeious hall and
stairway, and on Abe ground floor has commodious
parlors, a large dining room, with other appurte.
ounces. The sleeping apartments are numerous.
large, and airy—while on the side near the creek
are other rooms, from which the guest ham a good
view'
of the dam, the lock, the Allegheny river.
which is here a broad sheet of water, and the
Franklin Bridge-an excellent structure of tho kind-
The steam boats can also be seen at a consh.leras
bits distance as they approach the landing. '"he
house is tastefully papered and painted throughout,
and will unquestionably be one of the must route..
nient and comfaltalilo places of resort for travellers
between thui and Olean in the State of New York.
