arrsenott.—Vesterday morning a man nomad Da
vid Gallagher, was brought before the Mayortcharle
ed with violent and disorderly conduct on the pr,
thou. night. Watchman Orr stated that while on
his beat, he heard groaning and moaning in Pros
pect street, and ascertained that the wife of Gallas
gber wee sitting outside the door groaning pit,
ously. lie asked her what wets the matter, to
which she replied that her husband had got a little
liquor, and had beaten her, and she was afraid he
had broken some of her ribs by kicking her.—
Un further inquiries, (for she appeared reluctant to
make munplaint) the watchman ascertained that
the defendant had followed his wife with a gun and
bayonet a considerable distance, threatening to
shoot or stab her; that ha was then inside the house
and had locked her out. The watchman proposed
to take him to the watch house, and then she would
have the house to herself, but she declined, say
ing that she would stay in the street all night till her
husband got sober. She was informed, however,
that she could not be pertained to remaia in Lb. ,
street, to which she answered that she would re.
tire to the back of the house end there wait till
morning. On this the watchman knocked at the
door, when Gallagher made his •ppearan-e gun in
hand. The watchmen asked him what he was
doing with that, to which he replied that he kept it
to shoot any man with, who unlawfully entered his
house. In the end ha was arrested and brought to
the watch house. The above tact. were stated by
the watchman.
The defendant's wife being in the room, she wan
called upon by the Mayor to testify. She at first
timidly refused, saying she had never been sworn
but once in tier life before. After the oath was ad
ministered, she was requested to state what she
knew. She said he wan a little too high in the li
quor, that was all.
Mayor--llid he bent you
Wile—NM much, air. lie would not have
done it, but for the liquor—the liquor sets bun
mug, sir.
Mayor—Yes, a sets every body wrong, but that
no excuse. LW he kick you ,
Wife—Oh no--only n Mlle, he durnt hurt me
Mayor—lliti be follow you wick the gun
Wtte—l took the gun out of the house /If, and
put tt in the gutter, for I thought be would'ill
know how to use It. I'm to blame for the gun sir;
I must forgive him Ina time ate
IMayor—You may is you please, but I sha'at.—
We must teach turn to do better than qua.
Wife—C.ll yes air, do sir. I I you please.
Mayor—No indeed, I itha'nt. What have you to
say for yourself, sir '
The defendant admitted that the statement made
by tae watchman was isms. Being questioned
about the gun, he became very insolent and WU
sentenced to pay a tine of U, or be committed to
jattifor ten days.
At this the wife seemed much distressed and
begged her husband might he permitted to go home
and get some breakfast, which, of course, was out
of the question—she Mayor observing that be
would be furnished with some breakfast in Jul
The bare name of jail seemed to put the poor
woman almost bunt, andshe proposed logo home
and get the Sfi, which proposal the husband sternly
1 . 00.1.4 upbraiding her with being the cause of the
muichtel On leaving the office she affirmed that
dim Went to Jail she would go with him.
Truly "Love is stronger than death." This man
was evidently a man of very violent temper—not
withal...big all which. his wife was willing to
sham with bun both his confinement and degrade.

This Mayor generously returned her the whole of
