THE 7ICRDER CASE CONTINUED
Yesterday the Court opened at nine o'clock, and
the above case was proceeded with. The first
Dr. Dorsy—Esemined the body after death.—
Found a number of wounds—eight or nine. Made
a memorandum of the number and character of the
wounds. it is as follows:
Ist. A triangular cut, two inches from shoulder
point to bone.
'2d. A straight cut. an inch nearer shoulder, to
the bone.
Ad. A straight cut, an inch and a half further
:nick, through the scapula into the thorax. between
se,ond and third ribs. cutting intercostal artery.
from which considerable effusion of blood into
tno, and intianamation of pleura reauked.
6th. A straight cut on the top of the shoulder, an
inch long
sth. Straight cut on superior edge of shoulder
blade, cuuing off small portion of scapula, penetra
ting backwards two inches.
fit h. Strdight cut, inch further back, at extreme
edge of scapula. palming backward. an inch and a
half.
7th. Wound to right of spinal column, at top and
hack angle of the mght shoulder blade, passing
between third and !berth riba, cutting the thud rib,
and eatermg into the cavity of the chest.
Silt Several superficial and unimportant wounds.
Point of knue found in wound No. 7.
The 3d, sth and 7th wounds entered the cavity
of the chest.
Have no doubt that these wounds were the
cause of death. The 3d, sth mid 7th were the
most dangerous. Found an Immense amount of
blood deposited in the cavity of the chest. The
knife protruded into the cavity of the obese about
an Inch and a half Thinks the wound In which
the knife broke was the last one made.
fly Mr. Darragh—The point of the knife was
found in wound No. 7 Had them been any know
ledge of its being there, it probably might have
been extracted.
By the Court—The artery out might knee been
taken up, but it was a diffieuk operation. Indeed
there was no means of knowing of to being cut,
because the hemorrhage would be entirely within
the moray of the chest. Should think the Ird, sth
and 7th wounds were sufficient to produce death.
The effect of the deposit of blood in the cavity of
the chest, would be to produce suffocation, or im-
pede the respiratory organs.
By Mr. Darragh—ls starting, looktrig up and
down, a symptom of delirium tremens , It ts a
symptom of nervous anxiety. It in an incipient
symptom. It exhibits itself both in the use of ar
dent spirits, and in the abatement. from it Great
auxiety of countenance is another symptom. Per
sons laboring under delirium tremens have occa
sionally lucid intervals.
By Mr. Irwin—There are lucid intervals in the
early stages. but when disease a aggravated, lucid
intervals are rare, seldom much appearance of ra
ring madness, but, on the contrary, timidity and
fearfulness.
By Mr. Darragh—When the mind. in delinurn
tremens. is fixed on any one subject, it is generally
fixed—does nut csry from the contemplation of
such object. and In such case it is considered in
sanity until the disease is refitted. There is
generally a vacant stare of the eye an this disease,
but this symptom is not invariable, and is only in
the early stages.
Ikeseastruned by Mr Floyd—Have seen oommon
cases of drunkenness which would produce similar
symptoms. Have only described the early stages
of the disease. I..ooltents up and down once or
twice, with a nestles. eye, is not evidence of tnsan
tty. but probably the effects of dtortkennees which
will pass ea with drunkenness

been dressed, still the woman was bleeding I re

'Weed nine and ten cuts about the arm, back and
neck, apperently inflicted by a sharp instrument;
each wound about an inch long; they appeared to
have entered the cavity of the chest, but did not
know the knife was broken in the wound.

Capt. Roberts, of the city watch, testified that the
prtsoner was brought to the watch house on the
night of thu occurren., was brougut by Mr.

been drinking some, said be did not know why he

the number and the location of the wounds.
Jacob Gerhard,. re-called—Dld not see any Kink
about the house; thought he ebould have seen it
if there had been one, for he looked all over the
house, thinking the woman was there. The
morning alter, when be was before East. Steel,
he had a Hack eye, and on being naked how he
came by that, be said he got • it—l am not sure
whether from his wife or his elder son, two or three
days previous.

Mr. Heidleburgh opened the case for the de
fence. Having heard of the circumstances of
this violent death, and that the prisoner being a
German, was desirable of having German counsel,
he had visited the primmer In Jail, having been
sent fur. He was then inn very unsettled state of
mind, and, as it appeared to the counsel, in a state
of inanity. Ile, the counsel. being taken sick,
did not see pnsoner fiur a lortnight, at which
time he seemed inure raimnal. but in conversing
with him a little, he became again excited, got be.

himself as to cause alarm for his own safety. He
had never seen him alone idler that; had spoken
to some medical gentlemen to visit him, which,
however, they had not done; and fmm his (the

tirely deranged, and not merely under a tempo•

Had convennition with him; observed his face; one

it, and made motions as if they had knocked him
