The marry voice of childhood Is hushed to sobs of pain, As we pass into the darkened room, And look on Emma Jane! Why do the teaniThns blind our eyes Why sobs thus heave the breast , Tis but tha body that we see, The spirit is at rest. Yet still, although we know that she Is safe in heaven now, And that God's angels, while we mourn Are crowning her young brow ! Yet still we feel that she is gone, And left us here to mourn; For never more will Emma come Into her earthly home! Ah, she will never come to play With Charlie on the green: Or to meet her father at the gate, Will Emma more be seen. With tears upon her rosy cheeks, Dear little Maggy stands; And vainly tries, with looks of love, To warm poor Ernma's hands. "0, Emma's very cold," she says; " Dear mother, come and take Our Emma up, and kiss her cheek, And trim will make her wake." And now, a last farewell we take, We kiss her marble cheek, And look our last upon her face, So pale, so sad and meek. And now the coffin lid is closed, The funeral hymn is sung; 'Mid tears and sobs from aching hearts, Then runny we pass on. Unto her final resting place We lay her in the tomb, There to repose in silent hope Until her change shall come! Then she will leave her silent torntr, And gloriously arise With songs of love and joy to meet Her Saviour in the skies! A LONDON PRINTING-OFFICE _ • By 8 o'clock in the morning, the whole body has arrived. Many, in costume, re semble common laborers; others are better clad, several are very well dressed, but all bear in their countenances the appearance of men of considerable intelligence and edu cation. They have scarcely assumed their respective stations, when the blue mugs, containing each a pint or a half a pint of tea or coffee, and attended either by a smoking hot roll staffed with yellow butter, or by a couple of slices of bread and butter, enter the hall. The little girls, who, with well combed hair and clean and shining faces, bring these refreshments. carry them to those as who have not breakfasted at home. Before tne empty mugs have vanished, a boy enters the hall at a test walk, with a large bundle of morning newspapers under his arm; this intellectual luxury, the compositors, by a friendly subscription, allow themselves to enjoy. From their connection with the dif ferent presses, they manage to obtain the earliest copies, and thus the news of the day is known to them—the leading articles of the different newspapers ate criticised, ap plauded, or Condemned—an hour or two before the great statesmen of the country have received the observations, the castiga tion, or the intelligence they contain. One would think that compositors would be sick of reading as the grocer's boy is of treacle ; but that this is not the cane is proved by the fact that they not only willingly pay for these newspapers, but often indemnity one of their community for giving np his work in order to sit in the middle of the hall on a high stool, and read the news aloud to them while they are laboring at their work; they will, moreover, even pay him to read any new book which they consider to con nun interesting information. It of course requires very great command of the mind to be able to give attention to what is read from one book, when men are intently em ployed in creating another. The apprentices and the inferior workmen cannot attempt to do this, but a greater part of them, astonish ing as it may sound, can listen without in jury to their avocation. Very shortly after 8 o'clock, the whole body are set at their work, at which, it may be observed, they patiently continue, with only an hour's in terval, until 8 o'clock at night.—Quarterly Remew. Tux LEARNED FIMMI.-A friend who was in Hingham yesterday took occasion to visit the little girl who, it was said, had succeed ed in taming the fishes in a pond at that place, so that they would eat out of her hand. He found that the stories which have been told in relation to these fishes were not exaggerated. The little girl who has thus acquired a control over the usually shy inmates of the water, is about seven' years old. She is small of her age, and is a very interesting and intelligent girl She goes to the edge of the pond with a piece of bread in her hand, and calls her pets, in her childish, thou"h, musical voice, "pouty, pouty, pouty." The fish in the pond, principally horn-pouts, with some pickerel and other fish, immediately flock to the rock on which she stands, and receive from her hand the food which she has provided. They seem not to be in the least afraid of the little girl, but stiffer her to handle them without moving. One large pout in particular seemed considerably pleased at being patted on the back. With a view of testing the tameness of the fish, die mother of the little girl took a piece of bread and went to the water's edge. The fish came toward the bread, but discovering probably that it was offered by a an-ringer immediately darted away.—Bosionlournal. LAULHA Fatd.s, July 29, 1848. This morning 1 laid the last plank of my foot bridge on the Canada side, and then drove over and back in a buggy. Five hun dred feet of the bridge was without railing on either side My horse, though spirited, went along quietly, touched up occasionally with the whip, just to show him that he was In command, and give him courage. On returning I directed one of the drivers ro bring on his team—a two horse closed car riage, weighing altogether over a ton and a hall. I took his place on the box and drove over and back. The horses went quietly The flooring is but eight fed wide, 220 feet hkei, 762 feet long, one without railing, over such a torrent as you never saw, and never will see anywhere else!
