COPPER. MLNES OF LAKE SITERWR.
Cormepondence of the Detroit Advertise
Sam Ste Marie, Aug. 1515.
The rage of cooper speculation is now over,—
The crowd of adventurers who came to seek their
fortunes in a single day, and who wereloaded
down with the scrip of a thousand fancy compa
nies, have disappeared from the scene, and the bu
siness of digging copper has settled down to its le
gitimate channeL Do not. however, believe that
the value of the minerals of Lake Superior has de
predated, or that the quantity has disappeared.
beesnee the mere speculator—the man without
capital or system-has failed in his Utopian schemes
for sudden wealth. If you could spend an hour
on the dock of Malpighi & co, you would see
that the business had just begun io earnest. Three
hundred tons of native copper, in solid blocks,
averaging 2200 pounds each, attest toe mineral
wealth of the north, and, with the shipments al
ready gone forward, will make the product of this
summer
r 0661 tons of copper, a
ce lmost entirely pure
The propeller Independen, on each trip, brings
100 tons, and the shipments of this season will
amount at learn to 1000 tons, which pays ere cont.
party 5256,000--pretty good work for one mice for
one year, under all the diradvantages arising from
the work at so reamers a point. The traveller of
whom I spoke, examined these masses of native
copper in utter amazement, and, after having seen
neatly all the mines of the world, he declared that
he had seen nothing equal to Aia He expressed
the confident opinion that the miner_ of England
most close within five years, before these wondrous
veiug on Lake Superior. The Pittsburgh company
have bought their land, and just finished a larae
smelting establishment at Pittsburgh; and. as the
masses are so pure ' ana the remaining portion
crushed and mashed down to nearly clear copper.
it will prove to be the most economical place for
smelting. With another year, this company will
turn oat at least 2000 tons of pig copper. and
their yearly dividends cannot fall short of 120 per
shans.

The potatoe rot we regret to leani has made its
appearance in some of the Northern counties of
this State. In La Salle, the Free trader says not
a patch "will be likely to escape; and the prospect
is that there will be scarcely enough left for seed."
The same may be said of Peoria and Tazewell.—
This neighborhood, so 6r as our information el•

our acknowledgmeuts fur the admirable arrange
ments made by you. fur the transmissiuu of the
news by the Britannia this afternoon.
We have frequently, on other orcatoons, been
under obligations to your extensive telegraphic or
ganization throughout the East, and West, and
South; but the reception of the Bntimnia's news
deserves a special notice. By your enterprise. the
news was transmitted by a pigecri express to Bos

was actually puhlished here before it was announ

Boston. Wishing you continued success in your
endeavor's to furnish early intelligence,
We remain yours very respectfully.
