The Trioune's version of the Irish aews meete
with universal end emphatic condemnation from
persons of all shades of opinion. It is in truth one
of the boldest, u well as one of the clumsiest attempta
to impose upon the public of which we have any
recollection; and it will very much shake the rep
elation far integrity which the Tribune has germ. ,
ally enjoyed. The news on its face bore palpable
signs of falsehood. Not that it was impossible; or
even unlikely, hat a great battle had been fought,and
the British 'worsted. Success in the first onset we
were prepared to expect, whatever might be our
forebodings asto the ultimate result of-the struggle.
But that this particular statement was untrue, a
thousand circumstances—which must, we think,
have been in the Tribune's poasersion--proved.
General McDonald's troops, of which 6,000 were
repulsed and killed, could not have eicieeded 2,000
according to all other accounts The lady who, it
is said, passed the field of battle, and reports the
stench perceptible at several miles distant, must
have been there on the first, and yet the Freeman's
Journal of August sth, a paper decidedly in the
Irish interest, while it oontleued to attack the Go
vernment makes no mention of this great battle,
but saserts that the absence of more serious di.
