We have the Wowing from a condential corner
pondent its Dublin. It is almost too favorable to
the People to be believed, and yet the blind 111C011•
instant reports of the British press Deem to give
plausibility to our correspondent's statements—
The number of British tmcps said to be killed
seems exaggerated. The letter wits written in cy
pher to evade the vigilance of the British Pont
Office, which would otherwise have detained it,
but we make the number 6000. The writer would
not knowingly deceive the public. His brother is
a resident of this City. Without farther comment,
we subtoin the letter.
That a ammo,
ties en proper regard Inc the interest of all par.
gaged in transportation, makes ilium., that the
policy of this Company in relation thereto should
be developed, and that it in due to these gentlemen
and to the Stockholder. that the views of the Di
rectors should time be maths known as a guide to
the operations of the former and the expectations
of the latter.
In deciding a question of so much moment to
the success of the enterprise, the Board should be
governed by the intentions of parties who have
subicribed to the Stock of the Company.
The committee understand that the great and
priturdy objects the individuals and Corporations
subscribiag to the Stock expected to realize, when
they instituted the Company, were to makes com
munication through Pennsylvania, connecting the
Eastern and Wedeln waters, which should at all
seasona afrord a conveyance, rapid and cheap, and
secure uniform charges upon merchandise shipped
upon it, with the intent to derive increase of ho.
einem, incident to such improved means of transit.
With this view of the intentions of the Stock
Older., the Committee are of opinion—that it is
incumbent upon the Board, not only to construct
a road parlament in its character, with gradients
a. low as the nature of the country and found
economy will permit, but to conduct the Era:Nona
non upon it, at the lowest rates possible consistent
with a Ginned equitable remuneration for the caps
lid invented, and this latter object cannot be ob
tained, if the profits are divided with individuals
engaged in that business, because any profit
gai
ned by the individual, beyond the necessary char
ge. on the road, most be a tax upon the trade.
Hence, upon the completion of the road, the
tninsportatioa of metrhandise should. in the main.
be conducted by the Company, unless pnvate en.
to nee can work at cheaper rates.
The charter provides thai the road shall at ail
times be kept open as a public highway, at specs
tied tolls and chargesfor motive power, which are
thr below the gross charges for transportation made
by carriers on the Columbia Road.
If under those rates individuals can enter into
competition with the Company, every facility
should be afforded to them but they must bear in
mind, that prices will be regulated by the Cora
parry's charges, Cr they :connet permit the trade
through Pennsylvania to taxed In individual profit

So newspapers here dare tell the truth concern.
mg the Battle of Slievenamon, but from all we can
learn, the people have had a great victory. Gen.
Macdonald, the commander of the British forces is
killed, and six thousand troops are killed and
wounded. The road for three miles is covered
with the dead. We have also the inspiring Intel.
ligence that Kilkenny and Limerick have been In
ken by the people. The people of Dublin have
gone in thousands to 11310.51 in the country.
Mr. John B. Mon was wounded In both legs.—
Mr. Meagher was else wounded in both eme—
lt is generally expected that Dublin will rice and
attack the Jails, on Sunday night, Aug. 6.
Al the people coming in on the Railroad are
cautioned and commanded not to tell the news.—
When the care arrive thousands of the Dublin peo.

drive away those who ere seen asking quemion.

the spread of intelligence, unless it be that some
thing has happenedunieb they want kpt a ..ecret ,

Tam ALBANY Ftar--The extent of this calamity
la second only to the great Fire in Pittsburgh, and
calls . imperatively for the sympathy end aid of the
benevolent and wealthy throughout the country.
From a summary in the Philadelphia Lelger, we
learn that the number of houses destroyedwaa
nearly 500. The fire commenced about 1 o'clock
in the day, and continued until 4 o'clock, when
the wind turned :completely Its course, blowing
from south to north, a heavy shower followed
and checked the progress of the flames, which
could not be stayed before by all the exertions of
the citizens, and the blowing up of buildings.—
The fire originated in a very singular manner. It
appears that while a woman was washing, a spark
set fire to her sun bonnet. Without a moment's
thought, she jerked it from her head and threw it
she knew not where; unfortunately it alighted in
the stable of Wm. F. Johnson, which in a moment
almost, was enveloped in fames. Several distress.

nun physic; ians, tbere is not geaerally tenet cut

death, and this timed arises, M pad at least, from
theldea that it is attended with a great deal of ag.
ony. There is very Wan the appearatiee of much
pain., but we have been led to think that the en
perriance is more than the reality. We gee an
extract below containing the opinions of a medi
cal gentleman upon the subject
We think that most persons have been led to re
gard dying as i t aAtich more painful change than it
generally is:

able signs of diroess; muscular action and COW..
OUSlneal are two distinct things, odes existing sep
arately; and we have abundant reason to believe
that in a great portion of cases, those struggles of
dying men which ate so distressing to behold are
as entirely independent of consciousness as the
struggles of a recently decapitated Yawl. A see- !
and reason why men are led to regard dying as a
painful change, is, because men often endure great
pals without dying and forgetting that like causes
produce like effects only under similar circum•
mance'', they Infer that life cannot be destroy.
ed without still greater paid. But the pains
of death are much less than most persons
have been led to believe, and we doubt not
that many persons who live to the age of puberty
undergo tenfold more misery than they would gel
they understand correct views concerning the
change. , all cases of dying, the individual suf
fers no pain after the sensibility of his nervous
system is destroyed. which is often without any
previous pain.
Those who arestruck dead by a stroke of light
ning, those who are decapitated with one blow of
the axe, and those who are Instantly destroyed by
a crush of the brain, experience no pain at all in
passing from one state of life to a dead state. One
moments expectation of being thus destroyed fur
exceeds in misery the pain dunitg Menet. Th&se
who faint in having a little blood taken Gout the
arm, or on any other occasion, have silently endu
red all the misery they ever would did they not
again revive. Those who die of keen, and MOSS
other diseases, suffer their greatest pain, as a gen
eral thing, hours, or even days, betbre they expire
Thesenstbility of the nervous system becomes
gradually dimmahed ; their pain becomes less
and less acute under the mine existing case , and
at the moment when their friends think them in
the greatest distsess, they are more at ease than
they have been for many days previous ; their die
ease, a far as it respects their feelings, begins to
act upon them like an opiate., In eed many are

not for the 100 of their friends but their sympaihi•
ring anguish. Those diseases which destroy life
without immediately affecting. the Mitre°as system
give rise to more pain than those that do effect the
system so as to impair its sensibility. The most
painful deeths which human beings indict upon
each other are produced by rack and fagot. The

We are indebted to our neighbor of the Pitts
burgh Ctoisnan Advocate, for the fallowing notice
of a very interesting and important invention,
whiei we have not yet found tune to 151.1171 i.
New laverrnosi.—This is indeed an age
of inventions, but they seem nbt all to be
confined to "Yankee land." We were much
pleased the other day in looking at the mo
del of an anti-friction power Press, invented
by David Dick, Esq., of Meadville, Penna.
With the inventor we are somewhat ac
quainted, and have been very favorably im
pressed with the originality and profound
ness of his thoughts, and his talents in me
chanics and the natural 'sciences. It is an
attribute of genius to subordinate the great
and sublime calculations 01 mathematics to
our practical:. and social purposes, and Mr.
Dick's invention Is a beautiful Illushation of
this. This press may be used for any requi
site purpose—to press cotton, tobacco, hay,
Ste.—for printing, or for cider press. It is'
made of iron—cheap and portable. The
gain of power is immense. One mode of 1
its application is in punching iron plate ; and
with its aid a boy can punch boiler iron a
quarter of an inch, and even half an inch, in ,
titan:term We congratulate the talented in
ventor of this useful press, and hope that
while benefitting community he may him
self reap some reward tor his labor ,
