The following, which we clip from the St Louis
Reveille, of the 27th July. has reference to the old
Highland Mary, not to the new Highland Mary
No 2, which in a regular packet from this point to
Cincinnati. We mention this tact to prevent any
misapprehension which might obtain in regard to
Copt. Burk's fine boat.

worn Msay.—Last night, as the Highland Mary
was dropping out (Min the landine, - her steno, pipe
burst, and. sad to. relate,.at least six person., were
badly scalded—one of them, a boy ot thirteen
years of age, employed in the kitchen, fatally. there
can he but little doubt. The confusion and fright.
in the darkness, of course was terrible; but every
step was immediately taken for the relief of the
sufferers. The pour buy mentioned, had jumped
overboard in his agony. nod suffered indescnbably
on being recovered from the water. The skin was
stripped from his body; he
.cried that he had no
father or mother, and seeing his hopeless misery,
for he cannot be expected to recover, the softest
heart would have desired that he might et once
have found n grave in the river. The steam pipe
it is thought, had been thinned in the process of
Joining a certain portion of it.
Ac.—From the oificers of steamer St.
Peters we learn, that the Upper Mississippi river
was falling at Potosi, on the 24th inst. Below Ga
lean the river was on a stand. with three feet large
on the Lower Rapids. The Belmont from La
salle reports the Illinois river falling. below Peru;
there was front four to tire feet on the bars. The
Julia front Brunswick reports the Missouri river
also falling from thence down, with four and a half
feet water is the channel. The river oppoeite this
place continues receding slowly.
The steamer Amaranth left New Orleans on the
19th inst. Pasted steamer Atlantic on the coast.

After debate, the bill was passed.
The bill compensating CoL Johnston for the
buildings used as a Choctaw academy, was agreed
to.
House. —A message in writing was received
from the President, replying to the inquiries or the
House in relation to the strength of the army. lle
thinla the srmy should consist of 16.000 men, be
sides the officers. Referred to the Cdrcirnittee of
the Whole.
Another message was received from the Presi
dent, refuslngto communicate the ineaructions giv
en to Sevier and Clifford, as incompatible with the
public interests. Referred to Committee on For
eign Affairs.
A 6iUwen passed settling the Cherokee claims.
A motion to reconsider was debated and laid on
the table.
Sundry bills were read and referred
The Civil Appropriation Bill was amended.
The amendments relating to the Armisted Cate
and the Savannah River' ppropriation, were post•
paned.
The resolution for restoring the `...3outhern mad
contract to the railroad, was laid on the table.
The House then went into Corinnittee on the
Oregon Bill. A motion wan made to strikeout the
Governor's veto clause, but it, was defeated. The
Ordinance of 1787 was re-enacted.
The Army Appropriation Bill was debated, and
a resolution adopted to close debate on Saturday.

On the 10th of March, a battle was fought be
tween thn Indians and the Oregon Regiment.
The former lost 50 men lulled, and were defeat.,
ed. The Americans lost 0 killed and 10 wound.

visions and ammunition.
The Regimeot had been auceee.ful in &feuding
the territory, but was itt want of provlsionii, am

The Indians had entertained prop...salons for
peace, but no settlement had been made. The

Comanche Indians, on the iSth of June last, in
