General Taylor°. Letter of Acceptance
lirrox Rum., July 15, 1518.
Sia—l have the honor to receive your commu•
nicatton of June 10th, announcing that the Whig
Convention, which assembled at Philadelphia on
the 2tl of that month, and of which you were the
presiding officer, hes nominated roe for the office
of President of the United States
Looking at the compoiltion orate Convention and
its numerous and patriotic constituents, I feel duly
grateful for the honor bestowed upon me--for the
distiuguiehed confidence implied in my nommatton
Gsr, the highest °dice to the gift of the American
People.
I cordially accept that nomination, but with the
ineere distrust-of my fitness to fulfil the duties of
an office which demands ir its exercise the moat
exahed abilities and patnotism, and which ha.
been rendeted illustrious by the greatest names to
our history. But should the selection of the Whig
Convention be confirmed by the people, I shall
endeavor to discharge the new duties then de volv•
ing upon me, sn es to meet the expectations of my
fellow citizens, and preserve undiminished the
pns.p.rily and reputation of our common country.
I have the honor to remold, with the highest re
spect, your obedient servant,
