thus demonstrating that the writer is afraid of his
name, as well as a &hiller of facts. The official
. character of the paper containing the letter gives
it a tight to notice that it could lay no claim to
elsewhere. The writer in attempting to show tha t

Oue of the most unworthy attempts to mislead
or prejudice your ailed, was by the effort to army
one class of our community against the other, by
representing the proposed subscription as a lax
upon the many for the benefit of a few rick land
proprietors. It is not a little Singular that in Phila
delphia, the directly opposite position was taken
by the wealthy owners of real estate; ititltt it woe
contended by some of the wealthiest and most tel•
ented men in the country, that the pr used sub
scription would be an oppressive tai upon the

In thin city, it has been argued, that although the,
pretended ua would, m the first Maumee, be paid'
by the • owners of the real estate, yet, that they
would he abundantly reimbursed by increased
rents, and the tenants be oppressed by those Lighei

such arguments? Wit is, the subscribers would
ask what would cause a rise of seats? Surely not
