. Postage aueaktsexekt with, Gskat Britain.—
We learn from a source which admits-pf .no ques
tion, that at the time of. the Hibernia's sailing, the
basis of a treaty between Great Britain and the
United States bad been, agreed upon, which would
place the Post'Office arrangements between tbe
two countries on terms of perfect reciprocity.
' "Tbe New York Courier says—We published the
above paragraph on tbe 13th ultimo, and by the-
Britannia, just arrived, the statement if makes is
folly confirmed.
At the date specified the British Postmaster Gen
eral, Lord Clonricarde, bad made a proposition by
which precisely tbe same privileges were secured
to both tbe English and American moil packets,—
letters from either aide, whether pre-poid or not.
were to be forwarded, and the entire arrangement
was placed upon n basis of perfect reciprocity.—
Tbe terms were acknowledged b fTKt. Bancroft to
be both just and fair; and be was about to conclude
the arrangement, when he received instructions
from Mr. Cave Johnson which forbade it and broke
up tho whole negotiation.
We entirely agree with those who. under these
circumstances, throw4be whole blame of failure
upon the American goverumeut Hitherto, oil we
have pretended to ask has been reciprocity, and
when that was refused, our government acted right,
in retaliating. But now that this has been coned
led, for wbal object doe* our government still per
asttn thwarting the wishes and injuring tlie inter
ests of that great body of our ritixeus who are de
sirous that this matter should receive a prompt ami
final adjustment?**
Old Rick. —A gentleman who has resided for
many years ia India, fourteen' hundred mile* up

able to keep these rice, do uot eat it until it is two
years uld/ond the sofipart has been cat nut by the

Rice is Uie common food, and the poor people are
obliged to cat new rice, as rich people do here.—
Tats gentleman says that during his residence in
India, there have been famines in the districts
around him, in which “miliums of people perished.''
The famine* result from the entire absence of rain
for six months, and scorching winds, which de»
troy all vegetation. The British Govenupenl are
budding a canid of great capacity, from the moun
tains in which the. Ganges rises, down into the
country seven hundred miles, at on expense of fif
ty millions of dollare, for the purpose of irrigating
the laud.' The cost of the canal is to be paid fropi
the revenues of India. —[N. Y. Jour. Com. *
KLEcTto-JUuxrric Ore Setadatur: —The new
ly-eroded machine used ut tbe.New York Clinton
prison, invented by Ransom Cook, Esq, for picking
out the particles of iron from the crushed masses
of stone, is a curiosity. The ore, spread in a'sbeef
is moving in ono direction, while the e!eclro-mng>
acts, without charge, are quietly moving in an ojh
posit© one. On sight of the ore these hitherto has*'
sing bits of iron become instantly electrified, wnen
the ore and magnets embrace, each other With all
the ardor of long. absent lovers. Thus united
they move n short distance together, when the
electromagnets, as if seised with' a • uew • ca
price, suddenly lose their attraction and drop the
too confiding are, which then, like a disappointed
lover plunges into the stream, whcrejts sorrows
are drowned.
A Goon Circulation.—-There was sent to one

the city of New York, two ten dollar bank ooten of
the I’lnrnix Bank, dated November 1,1814, and
one ten dollar -bank note of the Hartford Bank,
dated January 1, ISl7;—the former signed Nor

—the latter, John Caldwell, President, and Horace
Burr, Cashier, all being true bills. The following
explanation accompanied litem:— j
-This ancient money was found sewed up; in
the skirts of an old woman receutly deceased.
Her place of special deposit was found to'con

having in the moan time subsisted on'charity.—

Monet Matters.— The Boston Courier, ofMon
day, says:—“Tliere is less com in money matters,
but the foreign news received on Saturday by the
Britannia, being of n more encouraging nature than'
any intelligence from Europe for some time past, a
decided improvement in the share market imme
diately took place." - ''
The New York Courier, of Tuesday, say*:—‘-The
arrival of later news from Europe, andtbe increas
ing confidence that the treaty With Mexico will be
ratified, in which confidence we folly partake, do
not seem to have produced much effect at the
Stock Board. The stringency of the'Money Mar*

mercial letters from different ports of Alsace, par

a considerable fall in the price of corn. Immense
quantities, collected together with a view to gain,
have been thrown on the market, in consequence
of apprehensions entertained by speculators of au
