PITTSBURGH H&BjKRTi
TOR THI WEXX ETOWQ t*ST' VVEtTOJ.
/ la reviewing the transactions of the past week,
' we find very little variation in the general charac*
ler of the market, from thatof the previous week
excepting that in breadstufli there baa been a gra
dual decline, while Sugar and Molasses have stiff
ened materially, with a marked advance in the
! Ultcr. I
The weather, during- the pa* week, has "been
unprecedentedly mfld and open to the season, ac
companied by some rain, and a more general thaw
than we have previously had. In conaequence of
this, we have had another riJe of 7 or 8 feci iu the
river. • ' j
The river baaineaa is still of a restricted charac
ter, and most continue so unlil the regular opening
of the Spring trade. The receipts of Flour, Bacon,
Pork, Sugar and Molasses, thowever, have been
liberal, and we-bave of these articles jnowin the
market more than an abundant supply J nnd we
in a few short weeks, upon |ffie opening
of the Spring trade, an activity in butmess equal,
if riot surpassing, that of anylprecedin| season.
The wagon lines from this 1 , point eastward, via
Chaabersburg and the Slacklwater route via
-Brownsville, have been time well,
by heavy shipments of Produce/such as Bacon,
Pork, lard, Butter and Tobacco, and that at rales
comparatively low, taking into consideration the
many impediments to these modes of conveyance
during a winter season. Some of these lines have*
daring the greater pah of the winfer, made their time
through from Philadelphia to this point in the ex
traordinary shorttime of five days, which reflects
grest credit upon their enterprising proprietors.

ASHES—The market has been very steady but
not active, with but little, if any variation 10 price*.
The receipts of the part week have not been full,
though, seemingly, quite sufficient to the present
demand. We are unable to report any considera
ble transactions, sales having been almost exclu
alvely confined to the regular tradedemand. We
quote Salcratua and Pearls at 7|<374; Scorching*
and Pots at 4105 c, and Soda Ash, 41011 c ? .
APPLES—The receipts of the port weekbaye
been limited, but the market is fairly supplied with
ri good article. Regular sales are effected from
store at $1,5001,87 ? bbl, as in quality.
BACON—The week’s transactions have been
full, which* together with the largo amounts thrown
into the marlut by our manufactories here, have
swelled tbe supplies far beyond the demands of
the market. We quote'regular salesof City core -
at 4,5 and 6cjp ft, and country cored at aboutle
lesfe - .
BULK MEAT—Every ™ ival . bel ®? r
throws into our market large amount* of this art**
tide; butin the absence of any demand equal to
the prices asked, we are without nny aalqa worth,
reporting. Dealers prefer smokiw preparatory to
the Spring trade, or shipping to Lartero markets;
and large quantities have already been tent in
that direction. . '
BUTTER—The market conlinued unchanged
ontil towards the latter part of the week, when a
slight variation occurred,. and. prices became less
firm, with a partial falling off, exhibiting moderate
transactions id Roll at 110121,'and in keg at 01,
91 and Ioc*> ft, according to quality. : 10f fresh
jar and print butter, rates have been reported to us
at 12016 c to tbe.tomer, and 20025 cents to tbe
latter. ’’
BUCKETS— We eotice no change in tbe mar
ket, regular sales are effected at $2,2502,50 p
dozen. 1
- BROOMS—SaIes of some 90 duz at to
common'to prime. ..
BEESWAX—Very little is brought In at present
and nothing doing—2lo22c may be given as a fair
quotation at present, by the quantity. '
COTTON—The receipts of the week just ended
liave been- partial, and we have no transactions
upon which to ground a quotation.

In the Eastern Cities, for the past week, there
has not been any. Very, marked change, but the ;
money market grows gradually easier. The high
rate of money ia Wall street, for a long time, has
diverted to that quarter a large amount see Id ay in
vestment. ! The accumulation from that cause has
been so great, that competition has brought dowa
the rate from i to H per cent a month to a fair
rate. The money market of England, 'top, has
had no small effect in producing this change, and
this relaxation in the rales asked by money fend

would crash mercantile enterprise, has adopted a
different line of policy, and now makoa her loans

well contented to give. This great sorploa of mo*

look to the United States as a proper place to find
good investments. A strong indication that such
capital is now here, can be eeen in the rumor that
Mr. Belmont, the New York agent of the Itoth

Union defies the rumor, but Wall street credits il*
and the (act is quite likely to be as rumored. The
