SfexJcaa Humors of Peace.
The Areo Iris of the Olh in>t, as we see by the

The tukatt ofjxace uoiiiD.— lo a letter re
ceived by us yesterday from our correspondent at
Jalapa, he informs us that an individual holding a
hieh position in the-American army, and whose «►
sertions deserve entire credit, said publicly. and
without the least reserve, that from letter* received
at Jalapa from Puehla, on the Ist tost, it was pOsi
uvely known that a treaty of peace had been SgZ
ed in Mexico. On being told that it was strange
that this was the . case, as Mr. Trist had hot the :
power to sign such 1 a' treaty, be answered that Gen.
•scott had taken it upon his own responsibility to
«gn the treaty, in consequence of which the treaty
had been sent to Querretaro for theiapprobation o,
the Mexican Government. The Free Americas
puts no feith tathe above rumor.
As a cbntinoation of thia peace rumor, we copy
the following lettef from the Washington corre*.

Thk Fantovr Couxr Maxtul.—The National
intelligencer of this morning publishes nearly seven
column* of the defence mode by Lt. Coj Fremont
to toe; charges brought before the Court Martial,
against him. These seven columns contain the
specific defence made to the distinct clmrgea of
mutiny. As there are two other charges to be
answered, we may sunpcaethaltlie'remaining por
tionof the defence wilfbe twice ns long ;u that
published. ' .
But though the defence is so long os to forbid
most persons from attempting to rend it, we have
ventured upon it so far as to bo ab!e to say, that it
is drawn tip with ability and skill. The charge of
mutiny, iq general, is answered by referring to
the instructions and orders from toe War and Na
vy departments, and it is argued that these were
such as required obedience on the part of Col.
irenionl to the orders of Com. Stockton, until Gen
era! K. and Commodore & settled life matter of
rank between . J
Those who have read any portion of the leslimo
ny taken at Jhe trial, will understand toe course
which such a defence would take. In opposition
to this point m the defcnce,-it will be remembered
that Gen. K. wud something about Col F. asking
whether lie (Gen. K.) would appoint bin Gover
nor of California ? Gen Kearney replied* that be
did not tocn see any objection to his doiug so
and that thereupon Col. F. said, -he would
Commodore Stockton, and that unless be appoint
eU him Governor at oace, he would notuU-V his
orders. . 1
• In his defence, CoL Fremont denies that the
eonversalion ever took, place, and enters into an
argument to prove, from the testimony taken and
the conduct aflerward* of Gen. fc, that it uU
nert be true.—-Those who are curious to see on
what ground so grave a charge is made will con
wluhe defence.'
The Court adjourned from yesterday over till
; to-day. when toe reading of the defence would be
iconcluded.— Baltimen Patriot cf 20.
