Debates In Congress.
. Washington,-Jan. 22d, 1948-
The Congress -has . now been in session nearly
Seven weeks, and although lew measures' of any
importance have as yet becaLtaiiturodand.adopled>
Jlja^mttobe.supposed tbatita deliberations.have
been productive of no good.- This is for from be
ing the case. The discussions-thai have , taken
place, and particularly in the Senate, cannot foil to
redound especially to the public-; advantage, if: they
do not prove a full equivalent' for the whole
expense of the session tbns'for. 1 - If I am not very
much mistaken they will arrest,'to a considerable
extent, the hazardous policy which- the--Adminis
tration seems daiterminedlo force upon ibe.conntry,
in reference to our Mexican relations. - There is no
iti-guining the foot, that the Executive and his odvi.
sera look to such a prosecutionof the war as would
most assuredly, according to my judgment, lead to
the conquest of the wbo]e of that republic. ' TbeeC
feet of the measures proposed'and pressed uponusi
must end in our haring upohoor bands, to be dis
posed of and taken care of a whole nation of half
civilized cut-throats and robberij. ■* .Who can ade
quately picture to himself the eyQsand the dangers
to this country, of such a state of afiairs? Who
can conjecture the pmoqnt of diebta it-will entail
upon this nation, and the extent and evil coose*
quences of the interruption toj’our peaceful busi
aess pursuits, which it will caustffor years to
But a ray of hope breaks,in upon us, whea we turn
our eyes towards the Senate; and witness the fruit
ful and noble efforts of our patriotic Whig Senators,
to save the nation from its impending calamities,--
It would have been a bleseuig tp the country, if ev
ery man in it 'cAuld have beard the speeches
delivered in that body, by- Messrs.
Pearce, Clayton, Badger and other able Whig mem
bers. They abounded in wisdnounscl, lofiypatrict

ed to a course of policy, which if adopted, would
take us • out of all our difficulties, and place our
glorious republic on op eminence, that would secure
t> us the admiration and applause of the 'whole of
Christendom. Whiiel waslutehihg to their speech

thought crer and anon crossed;my mind, that such

Stotes, and how lies prostrate at orir feet There
are three points in tbe'waron which discussion

We generalize, the whole subject in this way.
that dor readers may bee the bearingofthat part of
our paper- which is chiefly devoted to afiaira secu

Tbe question is whether the United States shall
hold Mexico to her present position till she learns
the wisdom which adversity alone imparts—till
time and experience have made her sensible of the
necessity of national frith and of the blessings of a
just and lionorable peace. The fatnre fate ofMex

We would in.ollkipdncKS ask how the editor re.
conciles this article with the. other that precedes,
it, in which he lays down the Christian’s rule of life
in relation to “party strife.’ He says,
“It behooves him, as a citizen of the kingdom of
Heaven, to stand aloof fron-ail such ungodliness—
to keep his fpiritpure andancootaminato from the
immoralities of political wtrfrre—in this particular,
to “keep himself unspottec from tbe world.” ”
Docs the editor call the remarks we first quote
standing aloof? Is not. ths declaration that Mexi
co struck the first blow a palpable violation of a
rule he lays|down in anotier place when be sayri
“While the Christian is called, thus to exercise
his prerogative as a citizei, it does not follow, that
he may participate' in the'tererjwhi’, \he calumnies
and unprincipled rivalries cf party strife.”
* - If the editor thinks tbe position he has taken is
warranted by the rule he bys down as the one for
Christians; we seenothtngU) prevent himjrom at

- ilixation arid Christianity, a.’e profoundly involved in
the djsciissioa,” that is, the qpmplcte subjugation of
Moxico. Does he mean t* say that the religion of
our Saviour -is to be forced upon Mexico by the
sword, and does he see wih the triumphant bat
bloody stars and stripes, tie peaceful emblem' o**
thc.cross, borne along, and feel that that is the best
way to subserve the interetts of Christianity ? We
notice this subject with deep regret, for it has been,
a source of linmingled pletsure"to feel that in all
this war, the pulpit and the religious press, hare with'
one consent raised their vri.ee against it. If relig.
ious teachers, are to encourage us to war and are to
encourage the idea that the sword can urge on the
